ON BKLIKFS Human nature has changed n great deal since our pollywog days. Man Is becoming a reasoning animal. That's what modern business Is based upon. Business Is a suspicious affair in which beliefs count less than nothing and the rattle of tho cash register provides the test of success. Home day life will be measured from a similar reosonable If more sympathe tic basis; When BOino of these ardent believers In righteousness take their eyes V(f the mountain tops and train them upon the selfish ways of mod ern life and the fierce terrors of moil efn ar, they may begin to point the finger Of scorn at mo ioiks wnose beliefs are at aero. In larger cities such tragedies frequently occur and arc soon for gotten in the metropolitan maze of crime und disaster, but in a smaller place like Mcdfurd, where we are all, more or less, like one large family, such a tragedy comes close to every home, and the calamity is therefore a poignantly personal one. Amos Willits was one of our most promising young business men, ami heartfelt sympathy from the entire community is extended his bereaved family, lie died as a volunteer fireman in tlie path of duty, and while words at such a time mean little, there may be to his fam ily and friends a certain consolation in the fact that he died in the service of his city. . The latest word from Fire Chief Klliott is that his injuries while 1 iiinful, are not as serious as first feared, and his prompt recovery, is practically certain, which will be welcome news to his relatives and many friends. While loss of life in such 'a tragedy, renders other losses scarcely worth consideration, the fact can't be denied, that the loss of the l'age Theatre is if genuine public calamity. While it is too early to know the plans of the l'age owners or management, it is to be hoped that the playhouse will he reconstructed at the earliest possible moment. Probably the fire and loss of life, came as a particular shock to Med ford because this communily has been exceptionally free from "iicli disasters in (he past. We have had large fires, but no extensive ones, and this is tlie first fatality in the local fire department for over a decade. I The obvious lesson is to abandon the idea that Med ford is lucky, and doesn't need to take such precautions and make such prepara tions as other modern cities, regarding the fire hazard. An efficient fire fighting force is not enough. It should be given everything it needs in tlie way of tlie best fire fighting equipment. QUILL No. 1024. Due at 12 midnight.
