THE RETURN
THE RETURN of Vcnizclos to Greece emphasizes two striking
' characteristics of the world political situution today.
Number One is the fickleness the amazing instability of the
popular will. Only it few years ago Vcnizelos after doing more for
Greece than any statesman of the present generation, was kicked out
of the country, and forced into retirement in Paris, virtually an exile.
Now practieully the sume political groups aro pleading for his re
turn, and lauding him as the one man who can save the country from
disaster.
This same tendency is apparent in this country, and throughout
the civilized world. The hero of today is the renegade of tomorrow.
Politically there is no such thing as steady progress. The state ad
vances only by notion and reaction, by going ahead only a little fur
ther than it slips back.
'
Number Two is the strange vitality of the royalist principle. Vcn
jclos returns to Greece, for example, publicly pledged to the reten
'Jon of the Grecian throne. lie believes in a royal house, not as an
active force in political administration, but as an ornamenal feature of
the ruling business, the retention of a tradition, which is dear to the
hearts of nearly all European peoples, mid a practical aid in suc
cessful government.
Tho world war of course, finally destroyed tho king as an effec
tive force in world politics. There ure a number of kings still going
through the motions, but the King is Dead, and Long Live tho King,
is no longer a valid echo, lloth Italy and Spain now have their dic
tators, and the other titled heads in Europe arc mere errand boys for
some largo protecting power ghosts of an era that, has definitely
passed. '
And yet there is no prospect of tho royal principle being aban
doned. Although politically one of the most liberal countries in the
world, Great Pritain for years has spent millions of pounds to keep
.lie king tradition alive, nnd her example promises to be followed
by most of the nations of Europe.
.
This apparent inconsistency is really not inconsistency at all. It
is human nature. Not only are habits of centuries difficult to destroy,
but ono of the strongest human instincts is the instinct of worship
ihu desire to look up to something that is higher than Hie individual.
So we have bad our religious symbols and our symbols of civil au
thority. The king, therefore, is retained as a symbol, for while the
man in the street no longer wishes to give him actual .power, he does
wish to give him a cheer nnd a salaam, when lie marches by.

WASTED
I'M THINKING of a learned physician who's just been sentenc
ed to the pen; and as he's old, in poor condition, he never may
come out again a man who once had high ambition to benefit his
fellowmen. A gifted man who might have risen to any pinnacle
of fame, had any purpose true been his'n, or stern resolve to play
the game; and now we see him sent to prison, all bent and bur
dened by his shame. No doubt he was intent on making, when
he was young, an honest roll; tho hard earned kopeoks he was
raking, like any other thrifty soul; but later-had a taste of faking
when he dug up the south-east pole. He might have been a moral
banker, dispensing coin at eight per cent, some hamlet's compass,
helm and anchor, by no cheap Uticas up -pout; but in his heart
there was the canker that one small tnsto of faking lent, lie
might have walked with merchant princes, and had a chain of
ten cent stores, dispensing nutmegs, nails and quinces, and ship
ping prunes to foreign shores; and now the livw its might evinces
by shutting tight the iron doors. "When once a la'nn becomes a
faker he'll keep on chasing easy groats until the village under
taker an earnest hour to him devotes; he'll keep on faking till
his Maker gives him his place among the gon,ts.

Side Excursions
I sort of flattened my own tires' at
tho very outset of this series of talks
about the periodic physical examina
tion of the apparently1 healthy by
blurting out that I have never tried
any of thlfl medicine myself. Maybe
, , that is Bufficlent
evidence that I need
to undergo a peri
odic health examin
ation just the same
as the layman does,
for all I Imagine I
know about the
ways of health anil
how to live.
In the hlnnk or
form CHpeclally do
vised for tho peri
odic physical exam
ination of persons
who do not yet need a doctor and
tho explanatory text accompanying it
(copies of which physicians may ob
tain from tho Bureauof Health and
Public Instruction, American Medical
Association, 535 North Dearborn St.,
Chicago, Illinois, at five cents per, or
in numbers at a nominal price) there
is nothing particularly about measur
ing the mental capacity of the client.
Just the same, even tho tho blanks
1)0 blank on the mental test, this Is
but one of numerous possible side ex
cursions, the human engineer must be
rondy to take with his client if indi
vidual circumstances require it. Men
tal hygiene Is ono of tho things the
client may particularly need for tho
good of his health; the doctor who has
made the health examination Is in a
position to help the client correct any
faults . of mental - hygiene. Five
minutes of It in the human engineer's
consulting room Individualized would
bo worth more than the reading of
any number of books.
Probably most apparently well
people right now have some little
question they'd llko to submit to the
judgment of a doctor but they feel
diffident about it. Seeing they are not
really sick enough to consult the doc
tor; they fear the doctor might not
take them seriously. Such matters
could be dragged forth and disposed
of easily and without embarrassment

Remember, the great aim and ob
ject of the periodic physical examina
tion Is to increase the sum total of
human happiness, and that la all It Is
intended for. Question 18 in the stan
dard form reads, "Are you subject to
worries or moods, or periods of gloom
and cheerfulness?" There you are,
and there's your friend the doctor
giving you an invitation to drag the
thing out and talk it over and let him

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
Babies Will Stand
Does letting baby stand too soon
cause bow legs if he tries to? Is it
injurious to raise a 6 months old baby
up by tho wrists? Any danger of
rickets in a baby breast and bottle
fed? (Mrs. J. N. S.)

- Sterilising
You suggested formaldehyde or
formalin for sterilizing. An old argu
ment we've had In this store has been
renewed by your suggestion. The
proprietor insists that formalin is
only a confusing name for formalde
hyde. I hold that formaldehydo Is a
gas, and that formalin is tho right
name for the solution of the gas In
water (about 37 per cent strength),
which Is listed in the United States
Pharmacopoeia as Liquor Formalde
hydi, I think. (D. H.)
. Answer. That's what I mean. Per
haps tho name 'formalin" was coined
by some particular firm which made
or sold the solution of gas. '
