Clarke, one of the ('minders of the Kn Klnx Klan, t assist the President in reforming that organization. Why the President of the United .States. who to say the least is rather a busy man, should be called upon to undertake this hercu lean task, his petitioner does not make clear. Reforms like charity should begin at home. If Mr. Clarke, who admits he was partly responsible for the Klan organization, does not like the present character of his own creation, why doesn't he set ciiout a reformation himselff Why burden the President? " The answer, probably, is the answer to many pertinent inquiries, polities. Involving President Coolidge in the Klan mess, would from the standpoint of a Southern Democrat, be good polities. Moreover the reform appeal on any grounds, is always good politics. AVhen the truth is known it will undoubtedly be found that Mr. Clarke is not alone in this "return to righteousness" crusade. The President, of course, will receive many suggestions. As Mr. Clarke admonishes his brother Klansmen to "reform or disband," it might well be suggested that the President merely blue pencil this order- substituting for the word "or" the word "arid," that would be brief and very much to the point. But probably more conservative counsels will prevail and the President will say nothing, which under the circumstances may be tho better policy. What interests us, however, even more than the President's future action, is the fact that one of the organizers of the Klan, publicly admits that the Klan needs reformation. In just what way wc wonder. Isn't the Klan still standing four-square for 100 per cent Ameri ennism? Doesn't it still oppose religious bigotry ami intolerance? Isn't it, today, as much opposed to, and as innocent of, any resem blance to masked violence, as was the case 12 or 20 months ago? Mr. Clarke doesn't suggest does he, that the Klan has degenerated into a mere political Cammorra, with its votes for sale to the highest bid der? : 4 ' So before any reform can be attempted, either by the President of the United States or anyone else, one must know, just in what way reforms are needed. Mr. Clarke is very careful to throw no light on this important phase of the problem. Until he does so of course, ignoring his appeal would be perfectly justified. The health Inventory scheme entails steadily growing popular interest n the ways of health and right living. n extension course, as it were, in the university of happiness. The well-known American Medical i association submits a form or blank which has been found a good general routine for human engineers to fol low In making these periodic health examinations; at our next conference on health assurance we'll take a look at this blank and get an idea what the periodic health examination Is like.
