Therefore upon my recent trip to I'ortland and Salem, 1 Inquired of the state tax commission and find thut tho stato Kovcrnnieut dm reduce tho state tax for the coming year from tho 0 mills of last year to 7.10 mills, a cut of almost 20 per cent. Looking tho matter up further upon my return I find that tho coun ty tax conservation commission, com posed of JudKo rhlpps, Mr. Fuller and Mr, Dimmlck anticipating that thero would be a cut In tho stato tax, bo rauso of reductions made by tho leg islature and anticipated revenue from tho Incomo tax did cut the' Item of stato tnxes In tho county budget V4 a mill. This was good us far as It went and probably neither tho county of ficials nor tho tux commission knew tho. actual cut. However, since the state tax levy has been cut almost 2 mills It seems to mo that someone should take It upon himself to seo that, Jackson county gets its Hhnro of this cut llko tho other counties nro doing. Huiely there Is llttlo rea son In tho counties sending legislators to Kalem and after they huvo cut tho taxes considerably to conio back and find that tho county court Is still levying tho old rate of 8 mills instead of tho almost 7 mills to which tho stalo tax was cut. This Is especially bo, as I find upon Inquiry that tho counties furthor north aro not only cutting tho stato tax tho 2 mills In their budgets, but they nro also cutting their own road and other county taxes nnpthcr 2 or 3 mills In addition to tho almost 2 mills that they aro cutting from tho stato tax, mnking a total reduction to tho tux payors of 4 or 6 mills. I can seo no reason why wo can not do tho same, especially when sta tistics show that our county Is con siderably abovo tho average of tho other counties of Oregon In Its tax rato. However, this may bo as to reduc ing our county budget propor, thero 'certainly Is no excuse for a budgot that has a reduction of only M mill In tho slato tax when tho actual re duction s almost 4 times that. Woro It not that thero aro hun dreds of. farmers and small proporty owners who nro unable to pay their taxes and tax sharks havo taken tho them for delinquent tuxes In tho last year It would not bo so serious, but homes and farms from a number of under tho circumstances It Is most Important that wo reduce our taxes as much as posslhlo so that pcoplo can pay them and savo their prop erly. This matter ought not to bo allowed to slip by as under a rocent ruling of tho Attorney (leneral, tho Tax Con servative Commission can rocull tho budgot and has until tho 28th of this month to finally certify samo buck to tho county, ri nspoet fully, JOHN II.
