Immigration authorities cito numerous instances in which aliens have paid .that sum in advance, only to bo turned back or taken ltno custody. This la a subject which I feel can not bo commended too highly and I am asking you to Rlvo that article, and also the enclosed from the Sunset Magazine, all the publicity your valued papor can afford. t No man or men under our present mode of living can survive under tho old rule; in other words, wait for a hay or grain crop to mature and then sweat blood trying to find a buyer. That is. what tho ordinary farmer is up against, but I feel as a good many others do, that ho -has himself to blamo In a good many ways. ' The remedy Is in his own hands milk a string of cows, havo a flock ot White Leghorns, consume . what he raises on his own land, and encourage the building and operating of a creamery and cheese factory in his locality. u , In vlow of the fact that tho cllmato of your valley is particularly attrac tive and favorable to tho dairying industry,- and that a feed ration second to none can be produced, this would provido the romedy- and bring pros perity to a very large number of your inhabitants. His prosperity means better business for us, and, anyhow, most of us would be unwilling to milk a string of cows seven hundred and thirty times a year' no matter how large the profit might be. - To the dairymen of the., Pacific coast tho export market offered by the Orient Is of specioj significance. The Orient; is beginning to consume milk In Increasing quantities, but few of tho Oriental countries have land and forage enough for dairy herds. Tho United States with 110.000.000 people has 65,000,000 cattle, of which 25,000,000 are dairy-cows; China with nearly four times the population has only 22,000,000 cattle of all varieties while Japan -with 55,000,000 people has less than a million dairy cows. As the milk appetite and tho pur chasing power of their countries in crease, the dairy farmers of the Pa cific coast will have to augment their herds to keep pace with the demand.
