ART TREASURES IN
PARIS The recent theft of two
rare Gobelin tapestries from the Ver
sailles palace has alarmed govern
ment authorities. The curators have
not funds enough to police In really
efficient fashion the palaces and mu
seums where treasures worth bil
lions of francs are kept, but several
short-cuts to safety have been pro
posed, i
' The first precaution was an order
forbidding guards and guides to tell
visitors of the great value of tho
treasures exhibited, "That would be
tempting the devil," tho curator at
Versailles said.
The difficulty of guarding the pal
aces becomes apparent when It Is
realized that at Fontainebleau there
are 2000 rooms to be patrolled by a
fw guards, who much prefer to
sloop.
The plans now before tho authori
ties call for an electric burglar alarm
system; flooding the outsides of the
buildings with light, and providing
tho guards with police dogs. Another
project is to use soldiers In tho guard
ing of these art treasures.

EUGENE, Ore., Dec. 19. The far
mers union In convention hero Is
holding closed sessions today, consid
ering matters pertaining to tho or
ganization and farm conditions and
problems. Ahout 300 farmers are in
attendance. Governor Pierce, himself
a farmer of Union county. Is chair
man of the committee on taxation. '
The delegates will be guests tonight
at a banquet tendered by the chamber
of commerce. Governor Pierce and
Paul V. Marls of Orgon Agricultural
collego will be the principal speakers.
President P. L. Campbell of tho Uni
versity of Oregon will give tho ad
dress of welcome at the banquet.
H. A. Shumway of Milton will give the
response. Carl G. Washburno, presi
dent of the chamber, will preside as
toastmaster.

ran, young Pacific coast expert, faces
the almost impossible handicap of
playing Willie Hoppe, two to one, if
he takes the 18.2 balk lino billiard
championship here tonight In the
third 600-poInt block of their 1500
point play-off of their recent tourna
ment tie.
Leading GOO to 203 after the first
night's play, Hoppe swept far into
tho lead last night when he gained
another 600 against Cochran's 233,
giving him a lead of 1000 to 436. To
win tonight, Cochran must make
1064 points, while Hoppe's task is to
obtain tho conventional 500.
Hoppo left tho balls in good posi
tion at the foot of the table for re
sumption of play at eight o'clock to
night. For the two nights, Hoppe has
an average of 55 1-18 and Cochran
24 4-18. Hoppe's high run is 211
which ho made the first night. Coch
ran has been unable to better the 80
he registered in the first Inning of
Monday night s block.
