President Obregon has been the first presi dent since Diaz who has shown any genuine capacity to maintain order in that afflicted republic. Hut unlike Diaz his policy of force hns only been incidental cardinal fcuture in his program, according to all reports, bas been a fiir-rcaching amelioration of sociul and industrial conditions, an ex tension of education and fair dealing with other nations. ' ' j ' If Obregon should fall how, another era of chaos and disorder would almost certainly follow. Hecognition of the new government by the United States would undoubtedly be withheld, and the sad record of the past decade would have to be repeated once -more. Undoubtedly President Obregon's recent illness was oiie cause of the present uprising. It is a cardinal principle of Latin-American polities to turn on the lender of the pack whenever he stumbles. It is also a well established tradition south of the Rio Grande, to settle political disputes by Imllels rather than ballots. The first sign of weakness on the part of any government is the signal for culling out the firing squad. Therefore, there is nothing surprising or sensational in the attempted De La Huertn coup. With Obregon's 'illness the uprising followed as a matter of course. While the mercurial Latin temperament nlwnys gives any rebel lion a certain measure of public support, there is BOine reason to be ievc that the reported successes of the De La Huerta forces are largely press agent pronogunda. Knowing that immediate success Is essential to their cause tho insurgents undoubtedly decided to win as much 'as possible with the typewriter, before machine guns were brought in. In the next few days some idea of the real situation should be learned. For the sake of Mexico and Mexican relations with the United States, it is to be hoped tho situation will reveal tho failure of he De La Huertn revolt. QUILL POINTS It's a fair division. THE LANDLORD. 1 j THE LANDLORD is n genial gent, a man of 'charm 'and grace j and when he asks you for the rent a smile adorns his face; 'twould grieve him much if discontent should in your heart bave place. Ilq'd see his tenants blitlio and gay When he comes to the door; he fain would seo you romp and piny about your cottage floor; and yet the coin he bears away will come to you no more. Tho landlord used to seek my shack ns each new month appeared, and merry quip and cheerful crack ho filtered through his beard; and yet he made my skies seem black, his footfall much I feared., Tho coin he took I used to need to buy things at the store, to buy n helpful book to road, a couch on which to snore; ho took awny, my ehickenfeed, and it eame liaek no more. ; The landlord ciimo' to get the price with manners most benign ; nlas, his bearing cut no lee, nor did his greeting fine; I bought his shanty twioe or thrice, and then it wasn't mine. At liist I built myself a hut, hard by the village pound, and when at eve the doors are shut, there happiness is found ; it is n humble dwelling 'but no landlord comes around. To other doors the landlord ;goes, to bone men for tlie rent,' and vain and empty quips lie throws, with wit and humor blent; but from my treasure chest he knows he'll never draw a RCllt. Wom en may not love more intensely, but a love affair, to the average woman, is a very personal and intimate en gagement. 8he plunges into tt with all her heart and soul and she is more DESPERATE about it. A mart will seldom sacrifice his personal Integ rity not even for love. To a woman in love, personal integrity Is of less consequence than a grain of dust that Is, for itself alone. - Women are constant; men ar fickle. HeIgh-ho,! wotta life, wotta life! j .(Copyright John F. Dille Co.) ! This will make tho fifth successive lecture on the general subject -of se borrhea, with my usual variations and evasions. But you gotta give me credit for a good deal of courage in these talks. Haven't I come right out with several recipes or formulas? With the white lotion a dram each of zinc sulphate and potasaa sulphu rata and four bunces of rose water well agitated and dabbed, on each night or each alternate night at. bedtime and washed off In the morning, the sim plest degree 'of se borrhea, which is popularly called "enlarged pore s," may usually be 'con trolled. This famous White lotion has the virtues of, an "astringent wltii the medicinal value of sulphur. Sulphur Is 'probably the best, remedy for sebor reic conditions In general. Sulphur, in the popular mind, is a sort of skin sarsaparilla But when taken Internally, so far aa we know, sulphur has but one effect. It Is a mild laxative; it has no, effect what ever on the blood, Impurities people eagerly Imagine in the blood, or morbid conditions of the skin. Sulphur got the sarsaparilla reputation by do ing such noble service in curing the. itch, scabies, which probably circu lated as freely among our immediate ancestors as some far worse diseases do among us. But whatever sulphur did any good in the itch it was ap plied to the skin, the itch being purely a parasitic infestation of the skin, the sulphur killing or seriously injuring the health of the parasite, the Itch mites, in the skin. . Sulphur Is excreted by the skin a fact which might seem to weaken the arguments I have just unwound. It Is normally excreted by the skin of a healthy person. The presence of sulphur or a sulphur compound In the sweat or the sebum account for the blackening or discoloration of some articles of Jewelry which contains some silver or other metal alloy, for sulphur even in the form of food tarnishes some metals. , This phenom enon therefore indicates neither poor Jewelry nor "top much acid," in the system nor bad health or any kind. Another excellent recipe or formula containing sulphur may be used either for excessive o illness of the face or as a sort of dry shampoo for the head when the hair is too oily. It consists simply of a powder containing about one part (i of . precipitated sulphur (which Is perhaps the purest and most finely powdered form of sulphur) and four parts of talcum powder. Any popular scented talcum powder may be used if preferred, for the purpose of covering the slight odor of sulphur. Such powder is excellent to apply to the face after a soap and water scrub or an alcoholic mopping. QUESTIONS AND A NSW ICRS How Come? Here's a question 'that comes lu about four or five times a week: Please tell me if it hurts me to e:y raw potatoes. I manage to consunie nine or 10 small potatoes a day, all raw. '(. . , . Murphy.) Answer; -On the contrary, If you like raw potatoes, br any other veget able raw, it is a healthful practice to eat 'em raw. Only remember, pota toes are good substantial nourishment; nine a day ought to keep a couple of policemen fairly well nourished if they'd only keep -moving. Grape Seeds My mother maintains that swallow ing the seeds of grapes will cause ap pendicitis. I think the chances of getting appendicitis are the same whether one swallows tho Boetls or not. AVho Is right? (R. R.) Answer. The fancy that the seeds of fruits may cause appendicitis probably arose from the observation of the earlier surgeons who often found seedlike fecal masses in tho diseased appendix or sometimes act ual seeds. But we know now that such foreign bodies cannot get into the normal appendix but may gain en trance to a chronically diseased ap pendix. The foreign bodies do not cause appendicitis. I believe swal lowing the seeds of grapes rather tends to prevent appendicitis. 'Cascarets" 10 c Best Laxative for Bowels "They Work While You Sleep."
