"The communities interested In Cra
ter lake and the Oregon caves must
get together on a common program to
secure the needed appropriations for
the two resorts, declared Col. C. G.
Thomson, speaking today at the
uumuer or commerce luncheon, says
Monday's Grants Pass Courier. "Col
onel Thomson, who has charge of. the
Crater Lake National park, stated that
the factor which killed appropriations
was the lack of harmony between mu-l
niclpalities and urged that southern
Oregon work as a unit to get the
things desired for the two national re
sorts.
"Tourist travel Is increasing every
year, stated Colonel Thomson, and
showed where the traffic to the Cra
ter park was 57 per cent greater in
1923 than during the year previous
Few Oregonians have seen the lake
or the caves, he said, and are unable
to tell strangers anything about
them, which creates a bad impression
among the tourists, the forest rangers
are instructed to do everything possi
ble lor the travelers. They go on the
theory that the tourist Is always right
unless he is so wrong that be must be
arrested."

Mayor George l4. Baker o Portland
waa guest of honor at the weekly
luncheon of the Medford Rotary club
today, and gave the members a most
eloquent address on Rotary principles.
Mayor Baker Is an enthusiastic Ro-
tarian and his talk was a decided in
spiration to the local club. In speak
ing of the value of public service,
Mayor Baker called attention to the-
fact that a state central bureau will
soon be established In Los Angeles to
advertise the resources and attrac
tions of Oregon. - Sufficient moving
pictures have been taken showing the
wonders of this state to run for
year and he predicted great good for
Oregon as a result of this enterprise.
Mayor Baker, accompanied by Mrs.
Baker, arrived In Medford this morn
ing from Ashland by motor accom
panying a party of Shriner officials
on their Journey from Portland to
Ashland, Mayor and Mrs. Baker will
remain here until six o'clock this
evening so that Mrs. Baker, who was
formerly Miss Clara Skeele of Med-j
ford, and who was married in this
city might visit old friends and ac
quaintances, j
The party of Shrine officials were
Conrad V. Dykeman of Brooklyn,
N. Y Imperial potentate of the Mys-j
tic Shrlners, Charles E. Ovenshlre of
Zlrra Temple of Minneapolis, who is
also chairman of the board of direc
tors and governor of the Minneapolis
and St. Paul's Crippled Children's
Hospital, which Is a position similar
to the one that Mayor Baker holds In
Portland; James Todd of the Medl
nah Temple of Chicago, 111., and
and Leonard Stewart of the Almas
Temple of Washington, D. C.

Woman's Missionary society, was un

Mrs, Ward Swopo, a state leader In
Missionary work, mado a short talk
and was followed by Goldlo Wells, a
returned missionary from tho heart
of Africa. Her story of tho people,
their customs, pursuits and tho won
derful work of the missionaries In
that country was very Interesting and
instructive. Miss Wells also exhibited
some curios made by the natives of
tho Congo region on tho equulor,
where site 1b stationed.

Plnkerton, one of tho owners of the
Plnkerton national detective ugency,
died here this morning at tho Hotel
BUtmore.
The death of tho former bend of
the detective agency came suddenly,
due to advanced age, according to Al
lan Plnkerton, his nephew, who was
at the bedside.
Mr. Plnkerton was 78 years old.
