O. 8HEPARD An event of church and civic inter est will take place Sunday, December 9, when the corner stono of the new First Methodist Episcopal church is laid.; The principal address of the day will be. delivered by Bishop Wm. O. Shepard at 11 o'clock in the old church. The cornor" stone ceremony at the new church will be at 3 o'clock. The address is usually delivered at the time and place of the laying of the stone, but due to woathor conditions, it was decided by the committee to have the address in the morning so as not to keep the people too long in the open: Dr. S. A. Danford, superintendent of the' southern district, will be present for the day, and will be the speaker at the evening service. Rev. E. P, Lawrence, president of the Ministe rial Association, will represent the othor churches of the city at the cor ner stone ceremony. In view of the proposed -union of the Methodist Episcopal church and the Methodist Episcopal church,. South, Rev. Mr. Coan, pastor of the local Southern Methodist -church, will place a trowel of mortar on the stone as evidence of the Christian good will o the two de nominations. '" .'. -Mrs. George Andrews, direotor of the choir, has planned special music for the day. At the morning service Dudley Buck's great anthem, "To Dcum," will be rendered. The solo parts will be taken by Mrs. Van Scoyoc, Miss Victoria Andrews, Mr. Maddox, and Mr. Fish. Tho offertory nnmbor will be a bass solo by Mr. George- Andrews. At the afternoon service "The Corner Stono Hymns' from the Hymnal will be used. At the evening service, Shelley's famous an them, "Saviour When Night Involves the Sky, will bo suns. Mrs. Sasnott will take the solo part. The cornor stono for the now church will be unusual In soveral respects, It was specially selected at tho Ash land quarry by the pastor and Mr. Hicks of the local granite company. It will be two feet six Inches long by one foot, four inches wide. The In scription will be in raised letters on a hammered stone surface. A raisod cross will ornament the stone on the side. A sealed copper box contaiplng a copy of the Bible, the Methodist Discipline, a list of those who have contributed to tho building, the off! cial board and building committeo nf the church, a historic sketch, local pa pors, "church periodicals, etc., will be placed In the stone and sealod all around with asphaltum,- thus preserv ing this data Indefinitely, without any possibility of deterioration.
