Tliey have heard from Special Prosecutor lSoggs. . . Hut the controversy will not be clear in the public mind until they hear from Governor Pierce. According to the Attorney General, Governor Piereo can retain a special prosecutor in Jackson county just as Ioiik as he believes the law is not being enforced by the regular prosecutor. That sounds rensonahle. But does Governor Pierce believe thai the Juan he appointed Prosecuting Attorney only a few weeks ut, is not enforcing the law? Did he appoint a man he knew would iu)t n force the law? Or has lie secured evidence sihee the appointment lliat his own appointee won't enforce the law? v . ,. . , i If the governor has any such evidence it) would appear to a man up a tree that he should produce it. If he has no such cvideircc then it seems only just that he should support the appointee he so recently named. " ' Vq can understand Mr., Borden's viewpoint wc can understand Mr. IJoggs' viewpoint but we can't for the life of us understand the governor's viewpoint. . '. ' ' - 1 ' f "'':! wil, CTifaMill If Governor Pierce, believes his own appointee is honest and com petent, then there can bo only one excuse for keeping a special prose cutor, namely that the extra work induced by the prohibition laws makes it impossible for the prosecuting attorney to attend to the full duties of his office without special assistance, v Hut in 'such a case it is obvious that siieh assistant should be a pi.rson iu harmony with the regularly appointed officer, and willing to work under his direotion. Mr. Hoggs is unwilling to do. -so. AVc should like to hear from Governor Pierce. IEE-MG1ITKI). MY GIlATlTrnK confessing, I humbly punch my lyre, for I have every blessing a mortal could desire. My health is vastly better than 'twas a year ago, the toothache and the tetter are gone, or nearly so. My brindled cow is yielding largo quanti ties of siuls, the spade I'm deftly wielding, digs up all kinds of Npnds. I've prospered in my dealing no plans havo gone awry, and rare has hit the ceiling, and I'm a grateful guy. Most faith-, fully I've striven to help good works along, and gladly I've for given the gent who did me wrong. I have no ancient grudges, I'd make no neighbor smart; there is no pilgrim trudges his path with lighter heart. I envy no one's bundle, I eovet no one's cur, as joyfully I trundle my person near and far. I'm thankful that my labors bring rest serene and sweet; I'm grateful -that my neighbors are all as good as wheat. My cottage is but humble, hut here my figtree grows; I hear the bright bees bunibl while looking for glucose; I hear my aunts uniting in grateful, happy song, and at this present writing I'm sane and fairly strong. Be side my door lanterns arc growing nino feet high, and I have no bananas a happy wight am I! I do not even maintain there is a germ theory. When certain strains or species of germs set up busi ness In anybody's tissues there Is no theory about It. It is a sad fact. The germ theory an a subject of loomed disco urso now belongs In the alma nac. The day has long passd when such factors as fright and exposure to cold can bo ttsslgned as actual or contrib uting causes of St. Vitus dance. For that matter, the same truth should "Tply to tho causation of a score of other diseases which wore formerly attributed to exposure or cold. "What does fluid or pus In tho chest mean? What aro rales? Is a stotho scopo examination as good ,us an' X lay? (K. C.) Answer. An attack of pleurisy (In flammation of tho membrane which covers the lungs and. lines tha chest wall) is often accompanied with an accumulation of fluid In the chest. This fluid may be clear water fluid (serum) or blood stnined or purulent. When It is purulent (pus) tho condi tion. Is called empyema; It is much more grave because of the septic state or blood poisoning that 'goes with it. For clear fluid, the chest Is punctured with a hollow needle and the- fluid drawn out by aspiration. For pus. It lis necessary to make a free opening and Insert a drainage tube. Some times watery serum accumulates ill the chest cavity in a general dropsy from heart disease. Rales are certain tittle crackling or bubbling sounds hoard in connection with the usual breathing sounds in pneumonia, tu berculosis and other lung diseases. A stethoscope examination is ordinarily much more informative than an X ray examination, but the X-ray exam ination may enable the doctor to clinch a diagnosis which would other wise remain uncentaln.
