such counties as he feels that the laws
are not being prooerly enforced and
may retain thorn there bo long as such
a condition continues to exist, accord
ing to Attorney General Van Winkle.
The opinion of the attorney genoral Is
understood to apply specifically to the
case In Jackson county, where O. C..

signed as district attorney there and
was succeeded by N. W. Borden, who
wag appointed to fill the vacancy by

day by Attorney General Van Winkle
In roply to a letter received from Gov
ernor Pierce. 'The atttorney general
held that the offices of district attor
ney and special prosecutor are sepa
rate and have no connection as far as
the law Is concerned.
Mr. Boggs was appointed special
prosecutor In Jackson county to take
charge of liquor cases. A controversy
Is now raging there between Mr. Boggs
and Mr. Borden with relation to their
respective Jurisdictions.

Each boy will carry his lunch tied up
in a package that can be discarded.
The troops, will leave the assembly
place at 9:15. The purpos eof the out
ing Is to combine both pleasure and
Bcoutcraft training. The cub scouts
ar enot encouraged to assemble for
this hike.. An interesting trip is plan
ned and every scout Is expected to re
port unless detained by bis parents. .
The Medford Scouts will put over
their first bit of civic work this week
in placing the Christmas Seal posters
through . the business section of the
city. The sale of seals will be as usual
by the school children as Is the cus
tom throughout the nation. Mrs.
Alice Halloway is in charge of this
department of health work In the
fight against, tuberculosis. The money
dorlved from the salo of seals is used

The recreation room of the new
First Baptist church will be officially
openod Friday evening with a social
gathorlng for tho young people, and
older persons interested. There will
bo gnmes and an Interesting time for
all. Refreshments will be served. A
small admission of fifteen cents will
be charged. The floor has been mark
ed for basket ball, volley ball and in
door baseball. The room Is already' In
great demand, not only by different
groups in the church, but by outside

ACQUITTED OF CRIME
C. L. Carter, age 64 years, an or
chard worker, charged with a statutory
offense, Involving an eight year old
boy, was acquitted by a Jury Jn the
circuit court Tuosday night, afte five
hours' deliberation. The balloting
stood 11 to one (or acquittal from tho
start, one member of the jury holding
out for conviction.
The circuit court at the completion
of this case adjourned until next Mon
day, December 3.
