During the first few minutes after
tbe naval court martial which beard
the Honda disaster case of Captain
Watson, commander of destroyer
squadron eleven went into executive
sesfllon to deliberate upon the finding,
the accused officer, fresh from the
ordeal of the wltnoBs stand, made a
statement both surprising and signifi
cant, a statement declared by Ills
brother officers to be worthy a man
with a record of 32 years excellent
sorvlce Id the United States navy.
Asked If he expected release from ar
rest within a short time which would
mean acquittal of the charges of cul
pable inefficiency with which be was
charged, the captain looked up quick
ly from the paper which be was read
ing. .' "I don't want an acquittal; no sir,
I don't want It,'' was the reply of the
destroyer force officer. "For me to be
completely acquitted by this court
would be. bad for the naval service, to
which both my father and myself have
devoted our lives. . I bellove that no
man In charge of vessels of the navy
at sea should got clear away when ves
sels are wrecked and lives are lost.
All' I want here 1b proper punishment
and by that I mean punishment for the
actual offense committed If I had
been oharged, with 'inefficiency,' I
would not have entered the plea I did.
I would have pleaded guilty and taken
my punishment at once. But I could
not plead guilty to 'culpable Inefficien
cy.' It was that charge that I am
fighting.' I made a seaman's decision
and I was in error, I am ready to
abide by the consequences of that er
ror. ' I want punishment must have It
for the morale of the service but I
want punishment for the offense com
mitted. I long ago on tbo witness
stand In the court of inquiry took re
sponsibility for the crash and I want
that responsibility.' But I must Insist
that tbe mistake was one of error In
Judgment . based on misinformation
and an Incorrect estimation of condi
tions, not the mlstuke of culpable In
efficiency." " .

trial of federal court of Robert 13. Ed
wards, Seattle, and Ralph Wolfo, San
Francisco, on a charge of murdorlng
George Edwards of San Francisco
August 17, while the trio were on a
trip across the widest part of the Aleu
tian peninsula;
Robert Edwards, who was a student
at the University of Washington when
he came north last summer with
George Edwards and Wolfe to work
In a cannery at Libbyvllle, on Bristol
Bay, Alaska, displayed no nervousness
In court His wife, who lived at New.
port, Wash., and was a follow student
at the university, is here endeavoring
to aid in establishing his Innocence.
Tho defendants and the dead man,
all young men, wore said to have quar
reled about the choice of a trail.
George Edwards, no relative of Robert,
was said to have been shot as he lay
In his blankets. Arrests followed re
turn of the defendants to Libbyvllle
with two rifles and other articles de
clared to have belonged to George Ed
wards. A motion to reject as Jurors all who
had read news articles about the trag
edy was denied.

Roy Hossonnner, arrested for vio
lating the ' prohibition law on two
counts, tho possessing and soiling of
liquor, whs fined by Judge Glonn O.
Taylor $700 dollars this morning In
Justice court. Tho arroBt was mudo by
S. B. Sandefer, county prohibition of
ficer.. O. C. Boggs represented the
state in the trial.
L. D. Harris was fined $200 by Judgo
Glonn O. Taylor on tho charge of
transferring and possessing liquor.
This was an old cbargo on which the
trial was not .held till this morning.
