First and foremost lie was not a politician. Born in Canada, later
n successful iron manufacturer in Scotland, lie was not a member of
the so-called "ruling class." He was not an orator. lie was neither
a jierso)' of charm or magnetism. And even more remarkable he did
not take the highest place in the British government when invited to
do so by his Majesty, tho King. ,
And yet while distinguished by his negative characteristics Bonar
Law finally did become I'reiiiicr and by the very absence of dramatic
i;nd spectacular qualities successfully bridge over one of the most
trying crises in post-war history. ,
That Bonar Law rose to the high place in public life he did, does
treat credit to the discriminating good sense of tho British people.
Bonar Law was essentially a business "inn, and he had the clear
practical views of a business man, combined with the shrewd common
sense of his Scotch ancestry. Ho was called to high office when the
problems were largely economic, and he made genuine progress, be
fore beiiif" forced to retire because of his ill health.
Bonar Law made Lloyd (ieorge. Willi rare good judgment he re
fused to take the leadership of Kngbind during the war, and with
characteristic loyalty and good sportsmanship, he acted as the party
goat, in the inevitable parliamentary squabbles which followed.
In a real sense the late Premier was a casualty of the war. The
loss of two sons ,in, France, the continual strain imposed
upon him as party leacbir in the house, so impaired his health, that
some fatul malady was almost certain to terminate his career abruptly.
Quiet, modest, unassuming, yet strong in his convictions and per
sistent in his course, Bonar Law will lie sincerely mourned by his
countrymen ond by the world. II is career demonstrates that in (treat
Britain at least, a man need not be a back-shipper or a trapeze per
former, to ciiler public life and render memorable public service.
