i Have you noticed the delightful
shortage of busybodics with the pro

them and why have they stopped be
ing busy about other people's busi

due to lack, of Interests of their own.
Life has now become more complicat

GETTING EVEN.
TOBIAS Gangling came around anil gathered up my cow,
and took her to the village pound, where she's in durance
now.. As soon as I cati raise the price I'll go and pay her fine, for
every hour I miss her twice, that good old cow of mine. Old
Gangling's had it in for me, he's hated me with vim, since I chop
ped down a banyan tree he said belonged to him. lie's waited
long to even up, and see his throats come true, and make me drink
the bitter cup that holds the wormwVod brew. And shall I go
with bitter words and roast him for his trick, with language that
would scare the birds and make my pastor sick I Oh. shall I, an
avenger dread, tramp down on Gangling's toes, and punch his
weatherbeaten head and tweak his ears and noseT Such ven
geance always is a fluke; when someone sears my hide; I find
the heaviest rebuke is kindness well applied. So I'll approach
this Gangling wight with kindly quip and jest, and treat him so
absurdly right remorse will fill his breast. I'll look for chances
to relieve the ills he may endure, I'll cheer him when he's prone
to grieve, when sick- I'll bring a cure. With wary hands hell
brush the sweat from his repentant brow, recalling with a wold
regret the day he jailed my cow.

advertising and editorial, and be icnor
ant of everything about the produc
tion f a newspaier, but If there is
one subject each is cock-sure upon, It
is his or her ability to produce a bet
ter newspaper than any existent.
To give its readers a chance t
listen to the words of wisdom that like
rain continuously patter upon every
newspaper in the form of complaints,
advice, criticism and growls, the Capi
tal Journal Saturday published its
' brick-bat" pagewhich it is hoped
proved as entertaining to readers as
to editors. All the "brick-bats" re
ceived, except some anonymous ones
whose scurrility would bar the paper
from the malls, were printed.
If a newspaper heeded the bedlam
of advice and criticism that constantly
besprinkles it, and operated according
ly, its history would be similar to the
story of the OLD MAN, his Son and
the ASS related in Aesop' fables:
An Old Man and his Little Boy were
once driving an Ass before them to
the next Market-town, where It was
to be sold. "Have you no more wit,"
said a passer-by, "than for you and
your Son to trudge on foot and let
your Ass go light?" So the Man put
his Boy on the Ass, and they went on
again. "You lazy young rascal," said
the next person they met; "are you
not ashamed to ride and let your poor
Father go on foot?" The Man lifted
off the Boy and got up himself. Two
women passed soon after, and one
said to the other, "Look at that selfish
old fellow, riding on, while his little
Son follows after on foot" The Old
Man thereupon took up the Boy be
hind him. The next traveler they met
asked the Old Man whether or not the
Ass was his own. Being answered
that it was; "No one would think so,"
said he, "from the way in which yoa
use It. Why, you are better able to
carry the poor animal than he is to
carry both of you." So the Old Man
tied the Ass" legs to a long pole, and
he and his Son shouldered the pole
and staggered along under the weight.
In that fashion they entered the town,
and their appearance caused so much
laughter that the Old Man, mad with
vexation at the result of his endeavors
to give satisfaction to everybody,
threw the Ass into the river, and seiz
ing his Son by the arm went his way
home again.
"Please all and you will please
none."
There Is not room for two policyless
newspapers in Salem, run by the con
tributing public, vnlorously exploiting
the vegetable kingdom, so despite the
wisdom so freely showered, the Cap
ital Journal will continue to formulate
its own policy, fearlessly print the
news and print it first, and interpret
it editorially in clear-cut and forceful
fashion for the right as it is given it
to see the right- And those who think
that they do not get two cents worth
in the Capital Journal will continue
borrowing their neighbors paper to
learn what Is going on and what it is
all about. Salem Capital Journal.
