May 1C Presi dent Harding plana to muko Ills trip to Alaska this Bummer on board tho navy transport Henderson, but on the return voyage 1b expoetcd to transfer at San Francisco to a shipping board vessel for a circuit through tho Pan ama canal back to an Atlantic port. The president's tentative plans pro vide that ho board the Henderson at Seattle. The trip to Alaska and back to San Francisco Is to occupy about a month. At Sun Francisco tho Hen derson will rcsumo her regular sail ing schedule By returning through tho canal,' tho president will curtail his speech making plans In tho west by about one-half. Ho previously had planned to come back to Washington through tho northern tier of states, wiji speeches at Aberdeen, Minneapolis, Chicago, Detroit and other cities in that territory. During his visit to 'Alaska, it was announced today nt tho Interior de partment, tho president will drive a golden splko celebrating tho comple tion of tho Alnskun railroad. The spike will be furnished by the citi zens of Anchorago and will be placed cither at Anchorage or at tho Tanana river bridge. ENLIST !N ARMY Floyd I (Speedy) Harpor and Ar chie R. Miller were accepted at the local recruiting office and forwarded to the main office In Portland for the final examination yesterday, for ser vice with the American army In the Philippine Islands. If the boys pass the final examination successfully at Vancouvor barracks. Wash., they, will sail from San Francisco on May tho 29th for Manilla, P. I., stopping on thotr way to and from Manilla In Honolulu, II. T., Guam, China and Japan.. In addition to the military train ing the boys will receive during their two years' foreign service, they will have an opportunity to compote with Chinese and Japanese in athletic con tests once each year while in Manilla. Mer chants of this city opened their doors again today after a night through which crews of men worked to ro move tho dobrls left by the flood and fire late Monday when torrents from a mountain cloudburst dashed down the slopes to form raging currents in Its principal streets, while flames en veloped the buildings In an entire block. Central avenuo, main thoroughfare and the chief stream bed of the floor 36 hours earlier, was again open to truffle, though the working squads were able to clear away but a small part of the wreckage. All public utilities gas, electric lighting and streot car service, which were put out of order by the ele ments, were again functioning. Mrs. Kate Christlanson, tho only person known to have received se rious injury in the disaster, lay In a local hospital today, still in a critical condition as a result of a crushed skull.
