NEW YORK, May 8. Tho 100th
anniversary of the first singing of
"Homo. Sweet Home," in Convent
Garden, will be celebrated tomorrow
on 'both Hides of the Atlantic.

The words of the celebrated song
incorporated in the opera "Clari, or
the Sweet Maid of Milan" were writ"
ten by.an American, John Howard
Payne, who tvus born In New York
City1 and spent his boyhood in East
hampton. where stands the old home
stead which inspired the song. The
music wus composed by Sir Henry
Bishop.
Suitable exercises will be held nt
the homestead, while in New York
schools 900.000 children will chant
the air, which later will bo sung In
front of City- Hull by a , selected
ciorus.

Payne used to tell his friends that
he caught the air from a little girl
during a trip through Italy.
The words of the song, Payne snld,
came to him while he was a student
at Schncctndy, N. Y., when he re
culled his boyhood days on the Long
Island farm.
Contrary to the general belief,
Payne was not a penniless wanderer
when he wrote the words of the song.
He was in Paris at the time, living
In comfortable quarters with Wash
ington Irving.
Born in a little red brick house in
Lower Manhattan, on June 9. 1791,
Pnyne was the sixth child of William
Payne, later principal of a school nt
Eusthampton, and a Jewish mother.
He spent the greater part of his early
childhood In Easthampton In the old
homestead which Is still standing and
open to visitors. A replica of his
childhood home has been erected in
Washington as a permanent exhibit
of tho better homes movement.

the Youkon river is breaking in many
"places and navigators here expect
that boats will begin their season
within a week. Winter freighting
over Lake Lebarge at the head of the
Yukon river was completed last week.
Steamers waiting at the foot of the
lake for the Ice to go will be the first
boats arriving hero. All are loaded
to capacity.

not a member of the Walker cup
team.

Dr. Willing lost the fourth hole in
his match with Grant, hut won the
eighth and ninth and was one up at
tho turn. Grant squared the match on
the tenth, but the Oregonlan took the
next two. He was donnie two at the
sixteenth, captured the seventeenth,
.four and six and clinched the match.
The American displayed a fine degree
of steadiness throughout. The cards:

On the outward nine Willing and
Grant played a remarkably-even brand
of golf. Their drives were about the
same length, their approach shot near
ly equal in distance and precision of
aim and both were putting well. The
westerner's steadiness began to tell'
on the homeward route. He outdrove
Grant and continued his excellent play
with the irons while his opplnent had
some trouble with' direction.
