fected. This Is a most thrilling stunt
and is performed directly beforo tho
grand stand.
The. fourth big feature act Is tho
transferring of a man from ono plane
to another during a flight.' The
change is offoctod by both planes fly
ing close together, one above tho
other until tho man standing on the
top of the wing of one plane graspn a
rope ladder suspended from tho other
piano.

The first formal meeting of the
Modford Itotary club was held at
noon today In tho small dining room
of the Medford Hotel.
At the Informal meeting held last
Thursday, and which was attended
by practically all of the 25 charter
members, the following officers were
elected:
Ralph L. Lewis, president; Fred L.
Heath, vice president; Wm. Gore,
treasurer; F. E. Osborne, secretary.
Directors: K. W. Clancy, L. D.
Jones, Volncy Dixon, Wm. A. Hanna,
Geo. T. Collins.
Until the charter is received from
the International Holury headquar
ters, tho local club will not begin to
function in all phases. After the char
ter has been received, the club will
begin to expand and new mombers

A Itotary Club is something Mod-
ford has looked forward to for many
years, and as tlmo goes on and the
representative business men are made
Roturlans, it Is something she will
be proud of.
Considerable enthusiasm has been
shown by the charter members so far
this Is going to grow and the same
enthusiasm will bo handed to each
business mun us he becomes a Kotar-lan.
TO BE DISCUSSED
Ono hundred and seventy-six 1ml

election for directors of the Medford
Chamber of Commerce and those
members who have not already voted
and wish their ballots to be counted
must bring1 them to tho chamber -of
commerce headquarters before four
o'clock tomorrow afternoon.
The names of the now directors
will be announced at the biff member
ship meeting toworrow evening. This
meeting will be held ut seven-thirty
in the basement hall of tho Hotel
Medford and E. J. Adams, private
secretary of Senator titanfield will
address the members,
Tho all-absorbing topic of publicity
and publicity literature for Medford
will come up for discussion. It Is evi
dent that a largo majority of the
members nro convinced that this Ih
tho phyaicologlcal time to Issue a
Medford booklet and provldo funds
for an advertising campaign for' Us
distribution.
Publicity literature Issued by other
communities will bo on display, as
will be an exhibit of every booklet
that has ever been issued by Medford.

chamber of commerce forum lunch
eon at the Hotel Medford this noon
at which there wa.s a capacity at
tendance. Dr. Wirt will deliver an
address on the Near East at the Pres
byterian church tonight.
Ono hundred' find fifty thousand
children !of all ages up to 10 are now
under the care of the Near East Re
lief, according to tho speaker. Dur
ing the last five -''years seventy-five
million dollars have been Bpent by
the Near East Relief. Tho books of
tho organization havtj been gone over
by the federal auditors and the Unit
ed Btates government states that only
five per cent of tho money spent dur
ing thoso five years has gone for ad
ministrative purposes. Ninety-five
cents out of every dollar go to feed
tho hungry and clothe the naked, ac
cording to Dr. Wit t.
Tho influence of the American
flag in the Near East and tho respect
shown it is greater than that shown
toward any other nation. America
hns tho chance to build up for her
self there a prestige ten times greater
than that of any other nation. The
Near East, according to the speaker,
1 the moat important part of the
globe In that it is the key to the Dar
danelles. Whoever holds control over
tho Dardanelles has a strangle-hold
on the food of tho world, declared

Tho Near East rtoliof Intends to
continue Its great work as long as
It is necessary to rear and educate
tho homeless, parontless children in
its care. They will be given the
same education that American chil
dren get. They aro being taught by
American men and women and when
they grow able to take car of them
selves will be tho leaders in that im
portant part of the world.
"Constantinople, a city of three
million people, is without a sewer
system," said tho speaker, "Hundreds
and thousands of girls, some of them
even of the .Russian nobility, degrad
ed to a point where thoy can be
bought body and soul, for a sandwich
or a cup of coffee, walk tho streets.
Even now thoso girls are being im
ported by their procurers to Europe
and oven to tho United States. How
do I know? I was In Cuba three
weeks ago and a steamer with twenty
of these girls aboard neurly landed
and was prevented only by tho fortu
nate action of tho authorities. I'll
wager they aro Bafo ashoro on this
side by now.
"No barrier high enough or immi
gration ditch deep enough can be
thrown around our country to bar the
physical and moral diseuso that can

Dr. Wirt exposed some very inter
esting views regarding tho interna
tional court immigration laws and
tho Chester concessions, "I want to
see Uncle Sam with his strong arms

"Other nations aro so close to the
Near EuHt problem and are so affect-1
ed by selfish Ideals that they cannot,
see clearly. Tho United States with;

squarely. The Influence of America
is greater than that of any other na
tion, ono crook of tho finger of the
American representative In an inter
national court,- would mean more
than a regiment of soldiers of any
other nation."

for a fifty cents n day wage Increase
ended today with tho granting of tho
Increase by tho employers, it wnn
announced by union officials. The
Increase had been authorized by tho
impartial wago board, formed by cer
tain business interests of tho city to
arbltrato wago differences.
Only a few men were called out
yesterday, it being tho plan to grad
ually call out more men until all were
on strike or until tho employers had
granted tho wago increase.

PORTLAND, Ore., May 1. Califor
nia cities will be brought nearer to
Portland through readjustment of
Southern Pacific main line train
schedules which will lop off 1V4 hours
from the Shasta limited running time,
with corresponding cuts In the sched
ule of other through trains, It was an
nounced at tho railroad offices here
yesterday. Pro-war schedules are, in
effoct established. The changes are
to become effective Mny 10.
Instead of leaving In tho afternoon,
as at present, the Shasta will depart
at 8:30 a. m., the effect of which will
be to give a daylight ride In both di
rections through Oregon. The Shasta
will arrive In Portland at the same
time as at present, 10:30 p. m.
Time on all through trains to tho
south will bo shortened materially.
Number 54 and number 10 will clip off
two hours from the running time,
njimber 15 one hour and a half, num
ber 13 one hour and a quarter, number
It one hour and number 53, forty min
utes. Radical changes In tho running time
both north and south of the passenger
trains of the Southern Pacific railroad
to go into effect May 10th, materially
affect Medford and will make much
difference in the arrival and depar
ture of mail, parcel post and express
In this city. Agent Montgomery re
ceived a copy of the schedulo' this
morning.
Just what trains will carry mail to
and from the city aro not known yet,
but Postmaster Warner expects to re
ceive official notice to prepare to meet
the coming changes, which are also
expected to change the time of arrival
of afternoon newspapers from Port
land, and likewise newspapers from
San Francisco. According to the new
schedule Just received the changes
will be ns follows:
North bound No. 54 leaves San
Francisco at 12:20 a. m., arrive Med
ford at 0:40 p. m., Instead of 5:35 p.m.
as now, arrive at Portland at 7:40 a.
m.; No. 16, leave San Francisco 8:20
p. m., arrive Medford 6:05 p. m. in
stead of 7:13 p. m. as now, and arrive
at Portland at 7:40 a. m.; No. 12
(Shasta) leave San Francisco at 7:40
p. m., arrives Medford 11:08 a. m.
Instead of 8:41 a. m. as now, and ar
rives in Portland at 10:30 p. m.; No.
14, leaves San Francisco at 10:20 a.m.,
arrive Medford 7:05 a. m. instead of
6:05 a. m and arrive in Portland at
8:45 p. m.
Soutli bound No. 53, leaves Port
land at 1 a. m., arrive at Medford 3
p. m. instead ot 3:45 p. m. as now, and
roach San Francisco at 9 a. m. ; No. 15,
leaves Portland at 9:30 a. m., arrives
Medford 10:40 p. m. instead of 10:50
p. m. as now, and reaches San Fran
cisco at 5:50 p. m.; No. 11 (Shasta)
leaves Portland at 8:30 a. in., arrives

Sheriff Terrlll, where they will serve
out their terms In the Multnomah

be kept at the expense of Multnomah
county, In exchange for their work.
Mrs. Nicholson, a middle-aged lady
recently convicted with her husband
of moonshine operations, on "The Is
land," near Gold Hill, was also trans-
ferred to the Multnomah county Jail,!
