' At a special meeting of the school
board this morning It was voted to
offer $25 reward for Information
leading io the arrest and conviction
of the person or persons who broke
Into the high school building last
night and rifled practically all of the
teacher's desks in the building.
Two weeks ago the building was
entered and Superintendent Smith's
office was ransacked but Nothing of
value was taken. Last night the
same thing happened and In addition
to Smith's office principal O. R.
Campbell's office waB gone through.
One dollar and a quarter In cash was
taken from Campbell's office. Teach-
er's desks were rifled and fountain
pens and other small trinkets of lit
. tie value were taken.
; The board hag decided to sift the
thing to the bottom this time and
special detectives are at work on the;
case. It Is the belief of the teachers ;
and school authorities that tho theft
was not committed by school students.

GIVE UP PLAYGROUND

agement believes that the people of
Medford appreciate the grounds. Mr.
Beeson has been put to considerable
' expense in preparing the grounds for
handball, horseshoes and tennis and
is now campaigning for members, an

will be forced to abandon them. t Per

munity playground of this type to

Mrs. Barber has been employed by
the local office of tho Pacific Tele
phone and Telegraph compuny for
some time past and has many friends
in Medford. Mr. Barber is a frequent
visitor to Medford and is an install
ing engineer for the Oakland branch
of tho Western Electric company. The
young couplo left last night at 10:50
for Oakland whore they will mako
their home.

strike at the Dedham jail, was remov
ed today to the state hospital for the
criminal insane at Brldgewater.

court ordered him committed for ob
servation as to his mental condition.

Mrs. W. N. Campbell and daughtor,
Miss Myrtle, returned homo to Grants
Tass Sunday night from Central Point,
where she assisted in caring for her
mother, Mrs. G. V. Wlmor, who has
been ill.
The King Tuts defeated the high
school horseshoe oxperts last night by
a score of 30 games to IS. The skill
of thp high school boys wbb remark
able but as Coach Lyman of the King
Tuts had predicted the dads wero so
far ahead of the boys that they felt
lonesome.. The King Tuts have now
Issued a defi and challongo to all of
southern Oregon and announce that
t)ioy will take on any team of horse
shoe pitchers for a match a week from
Saturday, tho moot to be staged on tho

A large number of people from this
city and Ashland mako dally trips to
tho Trigonla oil well In the Fern
Valley district. Col. Mundy, in charge
of operations, desires to have the im
pression corrected that drilling has
ceased. The well is now down to tha
depth of about 1850 feet, and is in a
limestone formation.
M. S. Johnson of Gold Hill spent a
fow hours in tho city Tuesday attend
ing to business matters.
A meeting of the Y. W. C. A. Girfs
Vocational conference will be bold
Saturday, April 28th at 1:30 p. m. at
the high school for vocational guid
ance. Ten high schools will be repre
sented at this meeting. An interest
ing program has been' prepared, a copy
of which will be published In this
paper tomorrow.
Martin Bowers was down from Gold
Hill today and took his wife, who has
been in a hospital here for three
weeks, home. Her many friends will
be. glad to know she is recovering.
Dr. J. A. Linville, of Portland, fed
eral prohibition director, Is In Medford
on official business today; He went
to Ashland this afternoon to visit
relatives, the Fredericks, and will
visit Martin Bowers in Gold Hill to
morrow before returning home. Tho
doctor says he is always pleased to
visit southern Oregon to enjoy the
wonderful climate and to absorb some
of the progressive spirit of the people.

Tonight will be pay night nga'.n
for Company A 18Gth Infantry, and
evory man will got his pay chock for
tho first quarter's drill of 1923. It
Is a great satisfaction to tho local
Oregon National Guard company
monibors to receive their pay checks
every three months rather than semi
annually, as formerly was tho rule.
Grater attention is being paid now
to the' National Guard by the War
Department, since the armory has
been procured and actunl construc
tion work has been started, which
will be pushed through to comple
tion as fast as possible.
This building will give to tho com
pany a good military home and a
safe placo for government proporty,
hence the government military de
partment has sent to Medford a resi
dent instructor from the regular
army. Sergeant Vaughn has arrived
in Modford and will make his perma
nent homo here. His time and ef
forts will bo spent In tho furthering
of the Interest of the locul National
Guard company, and his headquar
ters will probably be at the Armory
as soon as this building Is complot
ed. The new rifle range near Jackson
ville, which was approved by Adju-
tant General WWte on Sunday and
Monday, will be put in shape at once
for uso. . Through tho efforts ot the
company with the assistance of the
chamber of commerce of Jacksonville
the range was procured, - and the
chamber of commerce of that city are
taking immediate steps to have city
water piped to the rifle range Just
outside of town. The range will bo
used not only for the company, but
it is expected that the National Riflo
association will also have the use
of It.
The company Is now preparing for
the annual encampment at Camp
Lewis, which extends from June
15th to June 30th, and this camp will
be the most Important one held by the
troops as It will he an encampment of
the entire 41st Division which takes
In not only Oregon, but Montana and
Idaho as well. One of the features at
the camp wlll .be the special atten
tion paid by the military department
to athletics. The. principal drill pe
riod will probably be in the forenoon
and considerable time throughout tho
entire camp will be turned over to
the men for athletic work.
The Modford company will 'lmmo'
dlately recruit a few more young
men to bring up '. to the required
strength and Is now, especially work

lotin work. Tho company expocts to
come home from camp this year with
some of the prizes won from the en
tire 41st Division of the United
States.
The Medford command will take
with them this year a first class base
ball team, fitted out with baseball
uniforms, fncljuding' 'caps, blouses.,,
trousers, belts and stockings, which
have already been purchased.

special forum -meeting next Saturday
when members of the national organ
ization of real estate dealers will visit
Medford. Next weok's forum will bo

Stutes government today filed suit In
federal court here against the city of
Tacoma for $232,398.40, alleged to bo
duo the Unltod States shipping board
for extensions and Improvements on
the municipal street railway during
the war.
Thp suit, which Is a bill In equity
follows a demand of Mayor A. V.
Fawcott that the government olthor
cancel the debt or determine Its sta
tus In court. City officials havo ta
ken the position that the money was
advanced for war purposes to facili
tate ship building operations and that
it should bo cancelled. The govern
ment suit asks the court to vest title
to the car line In the government In
case the money Is not ordered paid.
