A, Mr. Rutherford comes here from a long lecture tour In California whore he spoke in practi cally all the high and grade schools of Die state. A physical wreck at the age of forty-six, he is giving his re maining strength to the task of warn ing young folks of the injurious effects of cigarette smoking, to which he at: tributes his present condition. Ho points out how the habit lost him an education, a home, the priv ilege of fighting for his flag and coun try and has brought him to middle life broken in health and a verdict from different physicians of but a short time to live. Mr.' Rutherford says that the wide billboard advertising of tobacco Is in sidious propaganda on the part of two of the biggest corporations in the world to educate the youth to con- Bumo their product. He demonstrates the presence of certain poisons in cig arette wrappers and exhibits convinc ing statements from Thomas A. Edl son, Henry Ford and others with re gard to the effect of the cigarette on employes. He showed a long list of great firms who refuse to employ cig arette smokers. Probably no speaker on a similar subject has ever had a more undivid ed attention on the part of the young filks, He gets his message across with a good sprinkling of wit and broad humor, but clinches his points without fail.
