The forecasted return to Oregon
politics of former United States Sen
ator George E. Chamberlain Is a
happy omen, welcomed by hundreds
irrespective of their party faith. Ho
never double crossed a friend, was
able to stand on his own hind legs,
could do something besides send out
garden seed, took his ordors from
nobody, much less Atlanta, Ga,, and
never consorted with organized flub
dubbery for votes.

THE FARMERS of Nebraska hate profiteers but they love Henry
Ford. The union lubor men of Nebraska hate tlio open shop,
but they want for President at least some of them a multi-million-airo
who conducts one.
Try as he may, Henry Ford can't spend his income. lie has pur
chased railroads, mines, automobile factories, hospitals, farms, timber
and what not, but his cash balance according to today 'b press re
port still stands around $200,000,000. . . ,
A profiteer is a person who makes an excessive profit from the
sale of his product. The relativo prieo of that product Jias nothing
to do with the case. John D. Rockefeller reduced the price of oil,
but ho is generally regarded as America's foremost profiteer. Henry
Ford reduced the price of automotive transportation, but ho has
amassed a fortune as great as Rockefeller's in one-third of tho time.
Obviously Ford could have further reduced the price of his car, and
increased his labor expense, and still have made a comfortable living.

Ford pays the highest wages, but he demands the highest effic
iency Hundreds of working men have broken under the. Ford strain.
Henry conducted a social research and uplift department for a time,
but he decided the workers didn't deserve it. He abandoned the
effort several years ago, arid today he has no more use for the union
ized shop than Fj. II. Gary.
Ford h ates the Jews. He has no sympathy for the ex-service man.
In Ford's weekly, tho Dearborn Independent, there was a recent
article which was generally considered a direct insult to the Ameri
can Legion.
And yet in every state in the union, and in every walk of life one
finds considerable Ford enthusiasm, very little anti-Ford feeling, and
a general sentiment, that if Ford were elected president he would
somehow, someway solve all our domestic problems, and place the
rank and file back in the Golden Age again.
Nothing in American political life is more amazing and inexpli
cable than the Ford-for-Prcsident movement. It defies all the rules
of the game, past, present and future. Originally it was regarded
as a joke. Well, perhaps it is. But it doesn't look like a joke on
Henry Ford. It looks much more like a joke on the American people.

from the World War Veterans' State
Aid commission of Salem, was sent to
the Jackson County-Red Cross office
and is presented for the benefit of
ex-8ohllers In thlB county:
1. Time limit for filing applica
tions for cash bonus has been extend
ed to December 31, 1923.
2. Time limit for filing loan appli
cations has been set as June 30, 1927.
3. Refunding the cash bonus and
thereafter taking the loan:
Any person who has taken the cash
bonus and who at the time desired the
loan but accepted tho cash bonus by
reason of misapprehension as to his
right to elect for a loan may, upon
refunding the cash bonus with Inter
est thereon at 5 per cent, obtain the
loan; provided, that the applicant can
satisfy the commission that he de
sired the loan at the time of receiving
the cash bonus.
The World War Veterans' State Aid
commission urges as much publicity
as possible bo given to information as
to the benefit through the Oregon
bonus law. . All veterans or relatives
of deceased veterans, who might be
eligible to this bonus are urged to get
in touch with the Jackson County Red
Cross. It they are residents of this
county their claims will at once be
filed and taken up by the World War
Veterans' State Aid commission. It Is
believed that many veterans are delay
ing their Initial application for the
loan for no particular reason but
merely because there has been no one
to urge them to action.

Westminster Abbey to find a parallel
fo the ceremony which will take place
there a week from today when the
Duke of York Is married to Lady Eliz
abeth BowcB-Lyon. .
The last time a son of a reigning
king married a commoner In the ab
bey was In 12G9, when Edmund
Crouchback was wedded to Avelene of
Lancaster, daughter; of the Duke of
Albemarle.
An interesting feature rising out of
the fact that the Duke of York's bride,
will not proceed from a royal palace
will be the dispatching by the king of
the royal coach to the home of Lady
Elizabeth in Bruton street. In this
vehicle the bride, suitably escorted
and attired in a Florentine gown of
Ivory chiffon moire, will drive to, the
abbey, accompanied by her father, the
Eurl of Strathmore.
When the coach arrives the bridal
procession will enter the abbey, pre
ceded by tho choir, which will sing,
"Lead Us, Heavenly Father, Lead Us."
