Hostilities were opened by e. gath ering? together of representative men of Gold Hill, Jackson county, in tho Person ot, Martin Bowers and M. 8. Johnson, two of the premier sports men of the . northern end . of the county, who are widely known throughout the state, Mr. IVilford Al ien, president of the JoBephine coun ty; Irrigation System, who resides at Grants , pass,' ' whose dam across Kogue river at Savage rapids has been the seat of contention, Messrs. William R. Coleman and Pat Daily, local district game and fish wardens, and the following members of the Crater Lake Rod and Gun club of Jackson county: F. R. Davis, presi dent; Sidney S. Smith, Frank S. Mil ler, "Chick" Hawk and "Buckshot" Simmons, Harris Janes, as well as Claud Bardon, a commercial fisher man of rants Pass. It is to be re gretted that the time limit in ne gotiating tho meeting did not permit ot notice being gotten to Ashland in time to secure representation from that city, though the interests of Ashland are identical with Medford in this instance. The gathering was In no sense an official visit, but was merely called losoiner lor me purpose of securing a definite understanding of whatever differences each party might advance and a possible solution ot tho Teal in the dissipation : o the imaginary grievances, ..- . . .... Since the erection of obstructions in the river during times past, the re tarding of the passage of fish through tho fish ways as provided by the va rious commercial interests in con junction with .the game commission, has been a bitter and long-drawn out wrangle, each interest contending for sorie real or fancied right infringed tTpon by the others. Since the removal ot the "Golden Drift" dam three miles above Grants Pass the greatest source of grumbl ing has emanated from conditions at the new "Savage Rapids" dam erect ed by the Grants Pass irrigation dis trict at an expense of tSOO.OOO, with a fishway on the north side of the dam only. The fishway is now con ceded by the Hertford and Ashland fishermen to be a very efficient one with the exception of such times as the changing conditions with respect to Irrigation operations congest the fish in the Tiver for periods of two or three days. The clamor has arisen each spring from Medford and Ashland to the ef fect that the adjustment of the open ing of the gates In the dam has been so purposely contrived as to preclude the passage of the. fish, through the ladder in this way. By the opening of the gates in the dam about two thirds of !he distance across the river from the fish ladder, there was a deep, eddy formed of "dead" water at the location of the mouth of the fish ladder through fish would not travel to hunt up the entrance of the ladder but would persistently fight the tur bulent current In a vain effort to climb a twenty-five foot dastt and the consequent mangling- of the fish upon hte rocks over which the- water tumbled from the .lam foicing those fibh not so mangled to drop fatthsr down the river in the eddioi unfl! such timo as they could reoupe.-ate for another fruitless dash ove,- an insurmountable obstruction. Herein lies the suspicions of the fishermen as to the la mess of the operators of tnc irrigation yntGP.. Tho county Hno between Jncl;sop nnd Josephine counties runs diagonally throuBhvthe dam. The directors of the Irrigation system are Josephine county men. The offended fishermen are Jackson county sportsmen who are not com mercial fishermen. Through the holding of the fish below the dam Josephine county fishermen have the fish within six miles of their doors as against twenty -six for MedTord fish ermen and thirty-eight for Ashland; the fish would be prevented from passing up the river for spawning purposes as -well; the tired and in lured salmon are easy prey for poachers who illegally take the fish with gaff hooks and nets during the midnight hours and peddlo them commercially through channels dif ficult for the officers to detect. Upon the arrival of the party at tho dain Mr. Wllord Allen very cour teously explained the workings of the dam to the assembled men and listened attentively to tho stating of the views of the Jackson county del egation as to the relative adjustment of the gates -with respect to the di recting of the current through tho stream with the object of the ellml nation of the "dead" water eddy at the mouth or Intake of tho fish led der and the prevention of the fish congregating In a dead pocket form ed by the current within easy reach of noachcra from the shore line ni rectly below tho dam and next to the Pacific Highway. At first glance this seemed to the sportsmen to be a matter which could bo easily ac complished . by the gate tenders if thev were inclined to h fair rather than hoellle. Tbouxh Mr. Allen as sured the party that the arrangement of the- gates as then In operation was the best that could be devised 0t was a result of two years of constant study and attention and could best bo attested to beisuch by reason of tnc scarcity of !ish below the oam.'yot the aate tenders were directed by Mr. Allen to lower the gate to suit the ideas of the group, which required a matter of some two hours and dan ger of accident to the dam, thus dem onstrating that the plan of operation by the irrigation district is aa nearly nerfoct as could be devised and is satisfactory to tho Jackson county snortsmen. and that km irrigation district and game commission were in good faith endeavoring to meet a bad situation to the best of their aoimy Being "bad" In the iwnw that any obstruction in t Mmim J bad. The Irrigation district nnd the game commission will henceforth find the sportsmen of Jackson county helping rather than hindering them and loud praise is now being ex pressed toward Mr. Ailen and his courteous endeavor to assist n better understanding between sportsmen and lrrlgutlonlsts. In rdT that the parents might know FOine thlng of the project, 600 square feot of garden space might be used in the work and at least five ot such vege tables raised as can be shown at the fair. Several very nice ptIjob -wot won in this garden project last year and for tows members this pro ject Is one of the best we have. In the same way a poultry club will be formed from tho members from all schools held at 11 o'clock at the library. This, project takes in the raising of baby chicks, ducks, turkeys at-.d old hons. Ail school children interested should !ie present foe or ganization tomorrow. Aside from ' these clubs for Mod- ford, a rabbit club will be formed, the meeting date of which will bo an nounced later. OBITUARY CLINE Alta Clino, wife of Carl Cline and daughter ot Mrs. Ella Walsh, former resident of Jacksonville died at Klamath Fails of puerperal fever, aged 22 years. She leavea her baby, husband, mother and tlireo bro thers, Harry, Clyde and Mangus, all of Klamath Falls. The remains will ar rive in Medford Friday evening in care of tho Pert Funerai Home. Funer al services will be held at the Presby terian church, Jacksonville, Sunday at 2 p. m. liev. J. Randolph Sasnett, offic iating. Interment in Jacksonville cemetery.
