order grape-fruit for breakfast in a
California hotel you get a small wiz

you order a Florida grape-fruit you
will get a cold icy stare and the infor

the gloaming gray, but whore is he, tho lonesome loon, who works
eight hours a dayt Sad is his fate, where'er he is; he bends to
useful toil, while countless autos pass him whiz, and uso up gas

away thing after all. The renewal of
activity at Mt. Lassen, In northern
California, early in March, empha
sizes the fact that we actually have
a live volcano within the boundaries
of one of our most populous states.
This example of one of nature's most
powerful forces Is only about 200
miles north of San Francisco and 300
milos south of Portland.

"When Mount Lassen became ac
tive in 1914 it was an epoch making
event, for It was the first volcanic
eruption within the borders of the
I'ntted States proper known to have
taken place within historic times.
Stones and mud were thrown for half
a mtle from the crater, while ash
drifted for 15 to 20 miles. Previ
ously the region had been a sort of
Yellowstone with boiling mud springs
emitting sulphurous gases; and a few
asltated springs that approach gey
lora In activity.

The road from Yreka, Calif., down
the canyon to the mouth of the Little
Shaitta is the narrowest and most
dangerous stretch of highway on the
Pacific Coast. As long as the state of
California leaves this death trail open
to traffic It should be held criminally
liable for every accident that occurs
on It.
Sunday afternoon, about five miles
this side of Yreka, coming back from
California, we came to a long pro
cession of cars lined up along the
side of the trull. Not caring to "go
through " wo lined up with the rest.
No question was necessary. In the
canyon two hundred feet below,
struggling along over tho rocks were
three small groups of men working
their wny up the creek each carrying
on a stretcher the body of a wounded
or dead person. Another group part
way up the cnnyon'"slde woro work
ing over tho body oil -a woman. Piled
in a heap In tho creek below was the
tangled wreck of a large touring car.
I learned that a short half hour be
fore a man with his family had been
driving carefully 'along this ' trail
south toward Yreka He was hugging
the rocky cliff as closely as possible,
when at thl.i, one of the steepest
tnd most dangerous parts of the trail
where the trail hangs highest on the
liff, he suddenly realized a, car from
behind was passing', him. 'Then felt
tho Impact of it against the front
wheel as It flashed ahead of him and
to safety, smashing as it swung in
front of him, his front wheel, taking
off the hub cap and bending tho tie
rod so his steering gear was useless.
Think of the awful moment for this
man when tho front wheels of his car
hended directly across the road to
plunge down over that awful cliff.
The erazy fool that was to blame
still lives. The stato of California
that maintains this death trap cannot
he held responsible The speed cop
that should bo continually on this
stretch of trail, especially on Sunday
afternoons was most likely hiding
behind some sign board down about
Oranadq waiting for some one to slip
across the city limits at more than
