THE WIDESPREAD raids oti Irish suspects in England yester
day cull attention to the fact that the Irish war is still going
merrily on.
In spite of umnesty offered to ull rebels if they would lay down
their arms, few of the irregulars took advantage of the opportunity
and the belligerent defies of De Yulcrii leaders continued.
Leaders are usually that way, however. They fight to the bitter
end, and keep up u brave front even after tho battle has been lost. It

ships aro running in opposite direc
tions, tho purpose being to determine
tho best method of firing nt an on
coming enemy. Next, the Mississippi
will bring her fourteen-inch guns into
play against tho radio-controlled bat
tleship whilo they steam in parallel
at a distunco of nine miles.
The Iowa then will bo turned com
pletely nround to determine what ef
fect the sharp chango of course will
have on the accuracy of fire. . and
next the Mississippi will ho put to
the test of hitting the Iowa whilo Bho
pursues a zig-zag course.

siderably less than those in connection with reinforced concrete Is perfectly
obvious from a comparison of the weights per fool of the two types; but just
how wide iao difference Is has boon a matter of conjecture, since definite

Figures just at hand In connection with three rocent State Highway
grading contracts throw quite a llttlo light on the matter of installation
costs. Bids wore called tor on an alternate basis, the pipe to be either
corrugated iron or concrete according to a later decision of the Commis
sion. Tho Highway Commission was to supply the pipe In either case, and
deliver It to tho railroad station nearest the work, so the calculations ot the
contractors wore confined to hauling, installing, and back-filling. The

erally awarded tho contracts on the typo ot culverts on which they make

ment tor tho lust two or throe years shows that on practically all bids, the
contractor's bid prlco has beon from 10 per cont to 20 per cent lower on
Corrugated Culverts than on culverts ot heavier and moro brittle materials
Tho flrat cost of Corrugated Culverts at tho manufacturer's plant, l
considerably higher per foot than tho first cost of culverts of tho heavier
and more brittle materluls, but owing to tho great difference in tho weights
per foot, on the two types of culverts na shown In tho forepart of this ar
ticle tho expense for hauling and Installing Is several times more than on
corrugated, and tho difference In tho oxcavation nnd back filling of tho
heavier types ot culverts is so much greater than on corrugated culvert
that It inukes the price considerably loss on corrugated culverts.
-Many people aro under the impression that a culvert of a heavier ma
terial naturally lasts much longer than a corrugated culvert which is of
much lighter material, but recent data Inspection of different culvert instal
lations, bears out tho fact that thore is much less percentages of failures In
corrugated culverts and especially tnoso made from a pure Iron thnn
