TUB PRESIDENT is said to have decided not to call a special session of congress even though the administration shipping bill was dei'eutcd. Mr. Harding is said to believe that the country wants a rest from congressional agitation. Business particularly, he is repre sented as believing, will welcome the nine months between the close ol the session March 4 and the time for regular convention in Decem ber as a period when it may proceed under full force without concern as to what congress may or may not do by way of legislation. We believe that Mr. Harding has read the signs aright and that the nation will welcome a breathing spell fi-oiii the uncertainties of congressional direction. The president Ts. represented as saying that he does not propose any further railroad action during tho congres sional recess, but will let the nation alone to direct its energies to commerce and.trade along all lines. . , , - Many measures were defeated in congress;' but the country can manage to struggle along without them." FOR ICE FREEZiNG Peto Ord, the forest runger of Cra ter National park who is in- the city on a brief vacation Train the lake whoro the snow la 30 feet und three Inches deep at the rim, brings back tho news that the experiment this winter at the lodge by the Crater Uilio compuny, which holds the park concession, of manufacturing Its own ice at the lodge In winter has not been a success so far and probably will not be, because the temperature has been too mild at tho lake, The coldest temperature at the lake so far this winter was four degrees abovo, notwithstanding the popular impression that that high elevation is a very cold place in winter. Anna Spring camp, fivo miles lower down in the park from the lake always lias a colder temperature by several degrees Whon it was 19 degrees below zero at Fort Klamath, 20 miles distant, this winter's cold snap It was only four degrees aliove at the lake. While the present depth of the snow at the rim is 10 feet and three inches, two feet more than last year at this time,, a few weeks ago the snow depth there was 12M- feet.
