After forty days not a sinjjlo important measure 1ms been passed (i ml lis tliu Orison Voter says t lit; intricacy of tlie problems involved brought "confusion worse confounded mid tlicu more confounded confusion." As wo have previously pointed put the essential trouble this year Stoes back to the election, uii'l the injection of the religious issue, with consequent organization particularly in the house, based on utter dis regard of personal fitness. Hut there is another important reason why the present session to date has been one of the least satisfactory in recent years. Import ant legislative enactments were insisted upon by (fovemor Pierce, but tho governor at no time, made clear tu the legislators just what he wanted. Some people maintain the governor is merely playing polities. That he is KtalliuK iiroiuiil, so that when the session is over nnd noth ing constructive- has been accomplished, lie can put all the blame on the legislature nnd to all criticism present his personal alibi, Perhaps, and perhaps not. Only the governor can know his inner most feelings and he shows no disposition to divulgo them. Hut this much is certain. Practically no one in the slate house, from janitor to chief executive, is eager to oppose the popular will. Kvcryonc wishes to give the majority of the people of Oregon what they want. The difficulty is to know what they want. Under the present, arrangement this is impossible. The legislators hear from certain interested parties from time to lime, but they have no way of knowing what public opinion really is. If there were a divided session, this opportunity would bo offered. II! tho legislators could travel to their homes now, and remain for two weeks, not only would a better understanding of the various measures be obtained, but every legislator would return with a fairly clear idea of what his constituents desired-. A measure providing for such a change in legislative procedure was initiated recently, but was defeated at the polls. AVe believe a similar measure should be offered again, and in view of their present experience the people should perceive the wisdom of passing it. Quill Points influenza is so small it can FILTER PASS THROUGH AN EARTHWAR Influenza Is not u now illHeaso world wide epidemics of tho disease haf o occurred ut Intervals Tor a long timo. The pandemic of 1!1S was the most outstanding of tho scries, bo cause of the high mortality that occur red with tho disease. It has been observed that during the years immediately following an epi demic of influenza there occurs sec ondary waves of tho dlseaso of a mil der character. At the present time wo are In tho midst of such u socondary wave. Mild influenza is now prevalent In tho state, in the United States, . and in parts of Kurope. It is of very great Interest to learn that on Feb. i, Dr. Simons N. Klexner, director of the Itockefeller Institute for Medical Research, announced tho discovery of tho cause of influenza. Investigations at tho institute have resulted in the discovery of a previ ously unknown, very minute germ which is presont in tho nose and throat during the first thirty-six hours of an influenzal Inroction. This small bacillus has never been found In heal thy persons, or those sick from other diseases. When tho bacillus Is In jected into the "windpipes or rabbits" It produces effects similar to those seen In human beings in the several stages of influenza. This new bacterium Is so small that it can pass through the pores, of an earthenware filter, and when magnl- lied one thousand times It can just be seen distinctly. It lias been given the naino of Uacterium I'lieumosintcs, which translated Into simple English moans that this germ Injures the lung tissues in bucIi a way as to deprive it of tho power, ordinarily jHissessed by- It, of resisting the attacks by the com bacteria of the noso and throat. The disease is Bpread in the same manner as an ordinary cold, primarily by direst contact. Avoid people who cough and neczo without protecting their noso and mouth with a handker chief. Avoid visiting people who are sick or who have colds. Avoid con Jested, badly ventilated rooms. Keep yourself in godll condition. Get the fresh air habit and keep it. RippIingRhtjiftQS IMPOSSIBLE OPTIMISM. 93 LKT US PAY our .income taxes with a broad and cheerful grin, looking not like battle-axes as we hand the money in. I-ct us be serene and sunny, chortling with a joyful sound; for our I'nele' needs the money, lie must make the wheels go round. Though the total has dismayed you, wear no frown upon your brow; being grouchy will not aid you-you must pay up, anyhow. It is hard to take the boodle Unit we need for gas and oil, paying it to Yankee Doodle, so he'll make the kettle boil. It is hard to hand the lucre that we need for pie and jam, and for games of bridge and euchre, to our worthy I'nele Sam. Hut our I'uclo needs the plunder, he is holding out his hands, and we strip our rolls asunder to comply with his demands. He requires a sum that 's regal, coin musi reach him in a stream, that our celebrated eagle may not wilt and cease to scream. So the dead game spurts are rising, with their bundles on their backs, and with fortitude surprising they pay up their income tax, And the pikers all are swearing as they near the captain's desk, they are angry and de spairing and their words are picturesque. Since we all must take our bitters let us take them with a grin, let us fill the air with twitters as we hand the kopecks in. Energetic! To tho Kditor: In your apoc of February 33 there appears a very poor aeeount of the basketball prime between Medford and Kogtm River last Monday niKht. I wish you would print thiH letter so that tho people of Medford will get tho straight of conditions. You undoubtedly printed the re port uh It was given you without any first hand knowledge f the game. The game is described as a "wild serainble" Instead of a good, fast, clean game of basketball. The re porter said that for. "want f .a bet ter name it was cane ., basketball." This Is only an indication of tho re porter's ignorance of what constitutes a basketball game. The article re fers to the Rogue lllver Community hall aa a "tiny hall" and a "dinky" floor. Tho truth' of the matter is that tho hall ik' regulation and answers tho requirements of na tional qualifications. It is as large as the gymnasium ut Ashland and is as largo as the majority of modern gymnasiums being installed in the re cent high schools. Tho hall Is as large as tho basketball "floor of tho Port land Y. M. C. Ann'Tho hall is much lurger and mueh;.l.inoro satisfactory than the nttlc of tho Oaskot Grocery, which is the best Medford community can now afford.- Instead of renting a swimming pool and skating rink, tho people of Rogue River have the j Initiative and spirit of genuine co- j operation sufficient to build a regu lation hall of their own. j I believe your reporter should be Informed that any .team is at a disad vantage on a strange floor. He should also be Informed that few ulaccs are going to build a Natatorium so that Medford players will always feel at home. He should also be Informed that thero were more than 400 people in tho hall Instead of lfiu as was re ported. Ho should also bo informed that tho gam was fast nnd clean and that both teams were well satisfied with the good clean conduct of every-j one In tho hall from tho referee to i the smallest router. I Rogue River is a sister town to I Medford. We want to co-opcrato all we can In making-Jackson county ai county of good spirit, free f rom i neighborly malico and discontent. The greatest forces toward keeping peace nnd harmony in the commu nity uro undoubtedly the schools and the newspapers. Your school has done her part, r hope your news papers do theirs. In these days of unreliable jourmi lism . Itf seems that The Tribune cant get tho trust of the public. A report such as was j printed concerning, tho game aocom-j phshes nothing constructive but does much destructive work. It Is very intereHiIng to note that the Ashland paper gave credit whihe credit was due. even though Rogue River de feated Ashland at basketball. Tho recent athletic controversy between Ashland and McdYord. pave an opportunity for outsiders to side with cither town. Medford wilt lose much mural support of tho public if she persists la such partial, biased untrue and misleading reports as the one which appeared last Monday. If a school of less than thirty pupils defeats Medford it is no disgrace to either team. It simply shows that constant practice will develop a good product. Would it not be a good thing for the Medford public to con stantly practice good sportsmanship and thus be an example to the younger generation coming up in their midst. The score of 3D-37 merely shows that Medford won the game. - It does not show that either team is the bet ter. The score varied too much through the game to prove a better team. Come on be a real sport print .the facts give credit where it is due. Very truly yours; A SPECTATOR-. 'Rogue River. " Feb. 14.
