The tremendous de preciation of the mark to a point little above the level of the Austrian crown and tho Russian ruble, besides creating a boom In the business of hand valises and small satchels, has caused several uniuslng Incidents In banks and money brokers offices. It Is a common sight in Cologne and cities in tho Rirnr to Bee foreigners, Americans, British or French, emerge from the banks bearing huge pack ages of bills loosely wrapped up in newspapers. A party of French corre spondents came to Cologne from Essen the other day to change some French paper money. They wore all millionaires when they returned to the Ruhr In the evening. Tlioy had changed one thousand francs ench. A British sold lor walked up to the cashier's wicket and presented a check, drawn on a London bank. The check was duly accepted, endorsed and perfectly In order. The cashier gasped as he looked at it. Tho amount rend two pence. . For a long time tho bank omploye scribbled figures on a sheet of paer. looked upon the Tommy with increas ing malevolence. He had a suspicion r the soldier wanted to have a little fun with him. Finally, the German cashier throw away his pen in disgust, began rum maging through his cash drawer and after, a few minutes handed tins Tommy the amount of the check.- A few bystanders who had appeared much interested - in tho proceedings snickered audibly at the British sol dier, who left without exulting. Tho joke was on him. The German cashier had passed out two English copper onnies. I OF ROME. "It's a real government," is the way the nverago Italian sums up his opinion of the new administra tion of Premier Mussolini. Whllo he may not be of Fascist in clination, yet after recounting tho many vicissitudes which the various Italian governments have suffered since tho urmistice, tho Italian on tho street complacently goes to his tasks and rejoices that, at last, there Is one government In power which has a pol icy, and is free from bartering and maneuvering for votes in parliament in order to hold its own. The bold front which Premier Mus solini and his cabinet have presented in faclug the problem of reducing tlie cumbersome bureaucracy of the state, with its army of state employes, has found joyous acceptance in tho minds of the ordinary toiler, who sees there in u chance for the reduction of the heavy taxes which nbw weigh on all classes. And when accounts are read in the nowspapers of tho long and arduous cabinet meetings, with ef forts to reform all tho departments of the government, the general comment is, "after all, it is a government." Tho largest audience, with tiro ex ception of Sunday night, attended the special services at tho Christian church last night. Music by the orchestra, the solo by Harry Scougoll and the congreguttouni singing wns a big feature of tho service. Many were present from different churches to get tho benefit of the Stewardship sermons which . started last night and will bo continued the balance of the week. Topic tonight: "How Much Owest Thou My God." Evangelist Bradford, on the subject of "A Square Deal for God," said in part: "Jesus said, 'Go into ull the world and preach tho gospel to tho whole creation.' Nearly 2000 years have passed and there nro yet whole races without God. For this new world in which we are living, a generation of now Christians must be rnisod up who will recognize tho principles of Christian Stewnrdshiii that God owns tho land, the silver and the gold, the cattlo and the beasts of the field that God is owner and that we are stewards or caretakers. "Jesus made this tho unvarying rule of his life. He demanded it uncondi tionally of his followers. Wo have overlooked tho fact that Jesus while on earth was deeply concerned about tho uso and abuse of monoy. Wo have overlooked the tromondous emphasis that Jesus placod upon wealth. Ono verse out of every six in Matthew, Mark and Luke has something about money. He speaks of pounds, trading, talents. He had more to say about a man's , attitude toward money than any other subject, and yet there Is not a little petty kingdom on the face of the earth as poorly financed as the kingdom of God. "We must learn the world's needs and wake up to our responsibilities. Jesus said 'Yo shall bo my witness, botli in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and unto tho uttermost parts of the earth,' and we are not witness ing for him nt homo. There are 58, 000,000 people right hero in what we call 'Christian America,' who aro not identified with . any church. The greatest hindrance to tho spread of vital Christianity is tho fact that God's own people are holding back what is his. "Jesus outlined a program that In volves money. If a mistake, has bocn mado Jesus made it This monoy must come from his followers. Ho said, 'Go into all tho world.' Before that ho had said 'Jf yc lovo ino koop ny commandments.' We must show our luvo by either going or sending. It Is going to take millions. What are we going to do about it? "Jesus died to make salvation pos sible, but It will not become available unloss wo get behind It with human effort. His death was sufficient, but it will only become efficient when we put our money Into the treasury." In tho absence- of tho chairman, J. It.
