THE BACK NUMBER.
I
MARVEL much at Beeswax Jones; the thought of autbs
makes him sour; he drives a pair of swaybacked voans, and
goes about three miles an hour, lfe sees his neighbors whiz
along iu chugging vans that split the breeze, and Beeswax prods
his team along, his whiskers falling to his knees. "These ears,"
he says, "are evil snares, they cost so much they do not pay; my
father drove two swaybacked mares; I follow where he led the
way." Old Beeswax Jones is always late, he misses everything
worth while; ho drives his erowbails to tho gate when other men
have scooped tho pile, lie drives along the roiul all day to see
tho circus nnd the clown, but all the tents are hauled away when
he comes yawning into town. Time has no vuluc in his eyes, and
he has all the time there is; and men who do the moments prize
iu busy busses past him whiz. Lie sees them pass, with futile
jeers, and says, "Such haste is all iu vain; my grandsiro drove
two brindled steers, nml he was strictly safe and sane." Our
fathers' deeds were doubtless wise, when life was calm nnd deadly
slow, but they are dead, and modern guys who wish to win must
up and go. j
