Although the wild turkey which set
the styie for Thanksgiving dinners on
tho occasion of the Pilgrims' first
Thanksgiving day three hundred years
ago has disappeared from New Eng
land woods, tnrne centuries of hunting
with firearms has far from exterminat
ed the wild lite of tho forests in this
section. Even In the immediate vicin
ity of Hoston, deer and ruffed grouse
are seen occasionally, and squirrels,
hare and foxes are regular Inhabitants
of suburban woodland. The pheasant,
not a native game bird but introduced
some years ago, has flourished in
Massachusetts and southern " New
Hampshire. Geese and an nbnndancc

lakes and streams In their migrations.

sist, but bears, common In that state,
are' still found also In the remote sec
tions of the mountain country in Now

season. In the fur-bearing category
racoons, skunks and muskrnts are still
plentiful, and In the wilder districts
mink and otter aro not infrequently
found. Tho wolves are gone; it is only
raroly that a panthor is reported, and
thon with doubtful authenticity, and
tho dam-building beavers now are few.
That the rapidly Increasing number
of huntora has not more seriously de
pleted tho supply of game In Now Eng
land Is duo largoly to conservation
measures. For many years , all the
states In this section have enforced as
strictly as possible the closed season
provisions of tho game laws, and in
recent open seasons the bag limits on
various classes of game birds and ani
mals havo beon made increasingly
smallor. Licenses also are required of
all hunters, and In the ease-' of non-;
residents high fees are domanded. "
The game euppor nowadays is often
tho sharing by an Individual or. a
group of hunters of the results of a
day's sport. Put In a few villages In
tho heart of tho woods it takes on nl
greater Importance. Teams of vil-'
lagers, fifty to a hundred on a Bide,
are pitted against each other in a hunt
from daybreak to dark. The men go
into the woods singly, each to his fa
vorite hunting ground. When all have

of Three Rivera, who startled the horti
cultural world by paying $50,000 In
cash for the privilege of developing a
single variety f strawberry, admits
that he owes his present position as
one of the acknowledged leaders In the
art of strawberry culture to fondness
for his family,
Thirty, years ago Mr. Beatty sold oil
pumps In the Inter-mountain and Pa
clfic coast states. Ho resigned to conio
back to Michigan and to the family,
although his business was highly re
munerative. Interested in strawber
ries, Mr. Beatty turned to their cul
ture. After 30 years In this business
he has this to say: "I delight In devel
oping or introducing a new variety of
strawberry. Whatever success I have
had is due largely to the cooperation
between agricultural colleges and fruit
growers.
"The now variety Is tho 'Rockhill,'
bred by Harlow Rockhill of Conrad,
Iowa. It should revolutionize the
strawberry Industry of the world, as it
produces more and larger berries and
fruit of a higher quality in the summer
than any of the best summer varieties.
During the fall months the plants
again bear. The fruiting continues
until snowfall and the plants do well
In any climate. "
"The plants root deeply, grow luxur
iantly, single hill almost as large as a
bushel hasket, and their great vitality
and vigor enable them to produce
abundantly. The plants have tough
loaf tissue and are not affected by any,
plant disease. . The Rockhill is a direct
cross of Progressive everbearer and
Early Jersey Giant." ,
Asked why bo paid a heretofore un
hoard of price for a strawberry plant,
Mr. Beatty said:
"I wanted to establish a standard of
compbnsation that I expect to result
in greater horticultural development
than has resulted before. I wanted to
awaken the ; public to an interest in
horticulture and stimulate plant breed
ers to greater development. Money be
comes a secondary consideration when
we consider thot- woll being: 0f all

Mr. Beatty has introduced four other
varieties of strawberries that have be
come standard cr'pps In many pRrts of
tne country. Mr.-.ueatty aaid that pre
viously $500 was tho largest amount
he had paid for ithy one variety.

Wanda Hawley and Mr. Sills are
fontured In "Burning Sands," which is
now being shown at the Page. In the
story, Miss Hawley is an English girl,
who falls in love with Daniel Lane, a
hermit who lives alone on an oasis In
the desert. This is the part portrayed
by Mr. Sills. In the course of tho
action, Barthampton, a renegade Eng
lishman, plans to abduct the girl and
Is prevented by Lane from exeputing
his design after a terrible battle in
which Barthampton Is killed.
There Is a capable supporting cast
Including Jacqueline Logan, Louise
Dresser, Winter Hall and others.
Western Drama, Rialto
Alary Miles Mlnter and Tom Moore
have been seen In this city on many
occasions, but "The Cowboy and tho
Lady" marks their first appearance to
gether In a Paramount production now
at the Rialto.
The picture is a stirring drama of
the west, based on Clyde Fitch's fa
mous play. A faithful wife forces, her
cad of a husband to accompany her to
their ranch in the west in the hope
that the open spaces will reform him.
But there are "other women" out there
and trouble follows. Dater there comes
onto the scene a real man, who un
selfishly shoulders the burden of a
crime to save the wife, whom he loves.
It is a colorful story, the supporting
players being Vlora Daniel, Robert
Schable and Patricia Palmer.
