Before entering this controversy The Mail-Tribune would like to
say a word for human healing, which unfortunately has received no
advertising at all.
Jackson county was the first county in the state of Oregon to
employ a county health nurse and seriously undertake the promo
tion of health and the elimination of disease as a public obligation
Today there are fourteen or fifteen counties in the state following
Jackson county's lead. And theie is every reason to believe Jackson
county, in proportion to its size and resources, now maintains and has
steadily maintained its pre-eminence in this direction.
It is impossible within reasonable space to give any adequate idea
of what Miss Faldine, our very competent county health nurse has
done in the past few years, but one incident which has come to our
attention may be cited as a fair example.
A certain boy in one of the county schools was, by his teacher
and parents, generally regarded as a mental deficient. Ho tried, but
he eould not learn. There seemed nothing to do but take him out of
tchool and consign him to a life of illiterate obscurity.
. The attention of the county health nurse was called to the case.
She examined the dad and found that he was not only under-nour
ished, but nearly blind. He was fitted with glasses, put on a simple.
well-balanced diet, and in a few months he hud skipped two grades I
this is only one case in literally hundreds, and many of them
lar more serious. Miracles have actually been wrought in practically

mysticism, or any other "ism," but miracles of intelligent care and
fclmplc hygiene transformations in the lives of individuals, which
seemed miracles to those benefitted, for such a complete change in
tlieir health and happiness was so easily effected, simply by the
substitution of wrong methods of living by right ones, of ignorance
and neglect by care and treatment.
This work must go on. Of course, it will go on. But The Mail
Trioune is calling attention to this much neglected department of the
public service, neglected, that is, as far as publicity is concerned,
because at this time there happens to be a Christmas seal sale going
on. The proceeds of this sale go principally to fight tuberculosis, bill
in case of emergency or pressing need, the resources of this fund are
also available for the county health work.
The more seals sold therefore, the more effective this public health
work will be.. "We can imagine no more worthy cause than this sale of
Christmas seals. For the work thus supported embodies the very
heart of the Christmas spirit, the bringing of light and good cheer
and happiness into the lives of the needy and ailing and unfortunate.
So in this atmosphere of controversy between those who believe
in Divine Healing and those who don't, we are glad to put in a word
as emphatic a word as we can find, for healing that is merely
human.
It is really a great and glorious service and a most practical and
profitable one, socially and economically. Under these circum
btanccs there must be few people :in Jackson county indeed, who
eari't afford to put all their stray pennies this year into Christmas
seals. .
