cil, with Counrtlmen Antle and
Keeno as absentees, passed tho ordi
nance levying a tax of fifteen mills
on the taxable property In Medford,
ns shown by tho assessment roll for
the oounty for next year.
This is .8 of u mill less than the
levy of lost year. The actual levy for
city purposes Is only 1S.6, aa the total
of IS mills provides 1.4 for public li
brary purposes. The estimated ex
penses for tho year 1923 for the city
of Medford total $66,473, of which
amount tho general fund. Including
all departments of the city govern
ment Is $44,301, tho floating indebt
edness Is $10,600, the sinking fund is
$0460, and the library fund I6S12.

act, appoint a scientific commission
to determine what Is Intoxicating

Wayne B. Wheeler, general counsel
of the organization announcing today
that representatives of the league and
prohibition workers from 4 8 states
and the District of Columbia had
voted unanimously at a meeting to
fight such a resolution, declared "the
findings of such a commission
would serve no helpfnl purpose In
determining what legislation Is nec
essary to enforce tho . eighteenth
amendment."
"We believe this movement for a
so-called scientific commission. In

solution of the law enforcement prob
lem," contended Mr. Wheeler, "but
