To the Editor: Previous to the last election, many of the Oregon dally papers, including tbe Medford Sun, printed long arti cles ii which excuses were made for the large amount of money spent in electing Mr. Newberry of Michigan to the United States senate. Many of the Michigan voters did not real ize what was taking placo when they voted for MV. Newberry until it was too late. Michigan people do not play politics such as many of our sen ators and representatives do and the moment they were given an opportu nity to swat this thing and show their disapproval ot such a dirty practice they did swat It with a bang. The Newberry case was a disgrace to the stato. of Michigan, but it was through no fault of the people of that great state Senator Townsend, a great man in many respects, made one big mistake when he played politics along with a large number in the senate and voted that Mr. Newberry retain his seat. This was too much for the citizens of Michigan and the result wa3 that In the last election Mr. Townsend was defeated by former Gov. Ferris, a democrat. Although Mr. Townsend is one of the scant half dozen big leaders in the senate, a power, for good, the Michigan peor pie would rather lose all of his pow er for thQ Btate and place their trust lu a man with less Influenco at pres ent and stamp out the disgrace that the figurehead, Mr. Newberry, placed upon the state. Michigan has come through celan and it will not be long before Mr. Newberry Ib back to private life. E. R. VAN LEEUWEN. Mcdford, Nov! 16.
