SAMUKIj CIOMI'KRS' attack upon the president's message was to
be expected. As leader of t lie American Federation of Labor,
lie must oppose any effort to curtail organized labor's exercise of au
tocratic power, or be thrown out of office 'by his own followers.
Nevertheless (Jumpers is opposing any effort to secure a work
ins; arraiifieincnt between labor and capital, which will protect the
American people from such disasters us the present railroad strike
threatened, is serving organized labor an ill turn. For nothing is
more certain, than that organized labor needs a more liberal and un
sjlfish spirit, if it is to survive.
True a different spirit is needed on the other side, but popular
feeling toward organized labor is such, that the initiative must be
taken by the forces which Gompcrs represents.
As usual, the federation leader has a great deal to say about wage
slavery. Under tho President's program he maintains railroad
workers will have to go to work whether they feel like it or not, which
"allows the probability of enforcing labor on everyone, whether
wage workers or not."
Of course, this is all tommy rot and Mr. Gompcrs knows it. A
compulsory labor law in certain districts might be a good thing, but
it is an impossible thing. No law can make a man work, ,no law can
prevent a man from not working.
All that President Harding asked was that, ns far as the railroads
are concerned, disputes between capital and labor be decided not by
labor or capital, but by a court, in which both factions and the public
would be represented. Then he asked that if labor refused to abide
by a decision of that court, and called a strike in protest, the gov
ernment bo allowed to run the railroads with labor that was wiling
to work, and that protection to such workers be'legally provided.
.
There is no more reason to assume the decisions of such a court
would be unfair to labor than to capital, would be any less proper,
than the decisions of the Interstate Commerce commission, or any
court of law.
For in the last analysis public opinion is the deciding factor in
rll controversies of this kind, and a labor court would be as power
less to defy public opinion as any other court in the country today.
The president's contention was essentially sound. Some such ar
rangement ns he proposes must be secured, if industrial chaos is to
be avoided. In this controversy the president represents the people
and Jlr. Gompcrs in our judgment, merely represents the radical
Kelf-interested wing of organized labor..

The love of money is also the root of all industry.
Tho greener the pitcher, the greater tho wind-up.
'At any rate, the railway labor board knows how an umpire feels.
Spare thu rod and you won't have any way to relieve your
grouch.
The lints protected by the tariff are not the only nuts connected
with that measure.
Animal instinct seems much less wonderful when you see a dog
nosing about a mule's hind leg.
It's carrying democracy a little too far when every second-rate
team has a 'home run king. I
The industrial combatants seem determined to fight it out with
this lyiii' if it takes all summer.
Of course nobody knows tho exact location of hell, but wo appear

And so a meat diet is making the Japanese soldier taller. That's
odd. It keeps us short in this country.
The Russians may be on short rations, but at least they are not
required to listen to a saxophone while eating.
Sneaking of dismal failures, there's the mother's effort to speak
sweetly to an impudent child when company is present.
Love is the quality that persuades a wife not to admit, even to
herself that her husband is no smarter than he ought to be.
They say our present coal supply will last four thousand yenvs,
and it. appears likely that the. public's patience will, also.

LIFE'S ROAD,
A LONG life's road I bear my load, which chafes my jaded
shoulders; with little rest I travel west among the stumps
and boulders. Sometimes I shed some teardrops red, by weari
ness I'm smitten; the trip's a bore, my legs are sore, where coun
try dogs have bitten. The night is dark and I must park my per
son in a stable, and ere I sleep I sometimes weep as fiercely as I'm
able. The night is damp and I must camp where I'ain and thun
der pound me, the night is cold and I must fold a burlap sack
around me. Ami such is life; its storm anil strife give me the pea
green willies; a thousand groan, a thousand moan where two kick
round like fillies. Now comes a knave with hand made grave,
he's strongly recommending, he says. "Lie here, and all your fear
and grief will have an ending. This grave," says he, "I guaran
tee to finish all your troubles; just climb right in, and woo and
sin and care will flee like bubbles." "I want no tomb," I. say,
"my gloom is merely grand, stand playing; I'll bear my pack
along the track, the sunshine on me playing.'' Men frown mid
scowl, they hoot and howl, denouncing life's dark journey, but
they all balk when salesmen talk of lots in churchyards ferny."
