ATTflUflT ' 1022 PACE TTTREE 3500 ACRES SHALE TO BE DEVELOPED tic one, and the praoiiraor ot a lead log revival movement not only In AsWnd but throughout other portions of Jack son county later in the season. V. V. Hawley, accompanied by his son's family who have been visiting here, left -Monday morning for Califor nia, the, return trip being by auto via Crescent City and Eureka, covering a wide extent of Interior localities and coast sections. ASHLAND, Aug. 1? A tract approx lmatlng 3500 acres in extent has been leased from the government by the Hartman Syndicate, Inc., which has southern Oregon headquarters In this city, engaged in the extraction of oil from shale, this particular rock abounding on the leased lands In fact, there is a big mountain of it. The ,.artman brothers are engineers, both civil and mining, and for weeks past, in a quiet sort ot a way, preliminary work has developed the extent and richness of the shale territory in ques tion. Locally, J. A. Barrett is also con nected with the enterprise. In a broad sense the Dead Indian country will be the scene of this new industry, the head of Antelope valley, near Grizzly Peak, being the specific locality. Al ready appearances Indicate that the eastern exposure of Grizzly will be Btripped, baring the rock for develop ment on a colossal scale. The Hart mans are patentees of a retort which is' said to be a marvel of inventive genius in the way of extracting oil frbm tlje shale. The by-products are al Bo of importance, including fire clay and lampblack, while the gas generat ed will be of sufficient volume to pro duce a commercial revenue. J. E. Jones, local painter reading on Iowa street, has gone to California for a visit with relatives near the old home surroundings at Cedarville in Modoc county. 'Jesse VlnbUrn, a chief marshal, will lead the parading hosts on Labor Day, a tripartite merger of Modern Wood men, Woodmen of the World, and rail road employes from this vicinity and tlie valley in general. Appearances indicate that there will be a huge cele bration in Ashland parks on that big holiday, a barbecue to be one of the leading attractions, supplemented with games, dancing, and athletic sports. Over 125 pages of reading matter and ads are enclosed within the covers of- the premium list of- the Jackson county fair, to be held at Medford Sept, 13-16 inclusive. The fair will be gin on a Wednesday and close on a Saturday. The grounds are easily ac cessible and the location a fine one, right on the main paved highway- con' ntcting Ashland and Medford. F. Montgomery is chairman, and W. E. Baldwin, secretary-treasurer. Furthermore, respect ing candidates for the city council, pre ferential sentiment was unanimously in favor of H. G. Wolcott as such rep resentative. Wolcott was formerly a railroad employe, and is now in the grocery business in the depot district. In most all of these beauty contests, the Movie stars and other girls exhibit the stereotyped smile, prominently dis playing the teeth as though the rivalry was one In connection with a dentifrice competition Involving the merits of pepsodent or sozodont. . Rev. J. H. Doran, caretaker at the auto camp grounds, meets frequently with old friends by virtue of the job with which he Is connected.
