I luul drafted a modest letter hanking my supporters in the eam- aign just closed, and expressing the iope that all agitation growing out t the recall might cease. This I aa going to hand to the newspapers, ihlch would have closed the whole natter so far as I was concerned, mt after rending the two communl- ulions, printed on 'page eight of I'uesduy's .Mall Tribune, It seems nec ssaiy that I elahorate a little. One of these communications was rot a Medford lawyer whose very tuaoft seems to have been dethroned iv hs stinging defeat in the May hrlmiiries; the other was signed by ha, invisible "Citizen's Committee," In wkjlch they used such terms as "vil- fioatlon, gross-sianaer ana vicious nntiendo," in describing the moth- Ms used by the advocates of the ro ll. This strong language might have pen permissible during the heat of he campaign, but used after the elec- on by the victors, It is most cer- i inly not conducive to that return 1 right feeling and nelghhorliness at all good citizens desire. The re II was not defeated by a majority stunning that it will justify very uch loud crowing by the victorious de. Out of the vote of r,.riS4, lierlff Terrill was only retained by measly mujority of 308 votes, a mange of only 155 votes would have one the business. Now since this agitation lias been opened by the opposition, I wish present a few facts to the people f Jackson county. In the campaign just closed I was ppo3ed by the Mail Tribune, the cutest source of publicity in south- Irii Oregon, and which is read by lousands of people every day, the ur Medford banks were against me, 10 two largest corporations in the illey were against me; I refer to the alifornia Oregon Power company ud the Rogue River Valley Canal impany, all the ex-saloon keepers ere ugainst me, all the bootleggers ith their friends, supporters and istomers fought me bitterly every bootleg, pistol totting attorney in Medford fought me, and last but not least, every Roman Catholic In Jackson county fought me to a fin ish, and on top of all this bitter ac tive, and influential opposition, the governor called a special session of the grand jury to meet in Medford at a time when it would aid in de feating the recall by be-fogglng and Ire-clouding the real issues of the campaign. Now here is the whole thing in a nutshell. If this sweet scented-bunch imag ine for a moment thut they can Im pose any humiliating terms of sur render upon the people who con scientiously supported the recall, they are just kidding themselves. Ifj tney absolutely insist upon anotner fight, we will most certainly accom modate them. However, all good citizens recognize the- fact that the people of this county desire peace, and an opportunity to resume their uccustomed friendly and cordial re lations, and if the people who defeat ed the recall and retained Sheriff Terrill in office will now get solidly back of him and hold up his hands" in enforcing the law against rich and poor alike, against not only the in dividual, but against class, or clan, cr club that persists in law viola tions, and insist that this ho done and done thoroughly by the sheriff's office, so that the expense of spot ters, detectives and special grand juries can be dispensed with, if these things are done Charley Terrill will end his term as sheriff with restored and increased popularity and with the good will and friendship of those who voted to recall him. I wish to express my appreciation for the loyal support given me in the campaign which has just closed. 1 venture to say, that no man in Jack son county who has run for office in the past ever had the support of so many uniformly, patriotic, law-abiding, Clod-fearing men and women as have I. 1 am proud of my friends and the few trreconciltuble eneimics I have made, I consider an asset. Walter Miller of Los Angeles said early today that while Johnny Meyers or Chicago beat him "fair and square" ill their mutch here lust night to determine which had tho better claim to the title of middleweight wrestling champion of the world, he does not believe Meyers can do it again. "I want a return match,", said Miller. 'I have posted a forfeit of $5(10 with Gerald Pidge, Los Angeles sports wri ter, for another meeting with Meyers, with side bets of $1000 and provisions to make the weight of 15S pounds ringside. 'if I don't beat Meyers under these conditions, I'll quit the ganio." Miller said he only weighed about 15G pounds with his clothes on, and that Meyers had all the better of thut part of it when they agreed to make 158 pounds at 4:30 o'clock yesterday afternoon. A large crowd witnessed the match which was hard-fought and which end ed in a decision for Meyers who made the only fall of the bout after an hour and forty minutes of the programmed two hours, when he pinned Miller's shoulders to the mat with a double wrist lock and body scissors. "We desire especially to express our appreciation of the efforts of the United States department of Justice in ferreting out thes crimes. This work has been of inestimable value to us in this investigation. "We have examined many wit nesses upon each of the cases submit ted to ns by the state attorney gene ral and the district attorney, and ns a result of that investigation have returned numerous indictments, the nature of which and the parties in volved therein being for public pur poses more or less se-rct for the present. The evidence tends to con nect others who are not yet indicted with some or all of these crimes, and ( at his own request, tills matter may be the subject of fur ther investigation in the future if it be found advisable, as additional in formation is undoubtedly obtainable. "The (Jrand Jury, therefore, re spectfully suggests that it may bo nt this time permitted to adjourn its investigation until its regular sitting, or until tho further order of the court." Hill, and John Doe, whose true nnme is un known to this grand jury, Richard Doe, whose true name is unknown to this grand jury, etc., etc., are ac cused by the grand jury of Jackson county by this Indictment of the crime of riot, committed aa follows: That the said llert Moses, How ard A. Hill and John Doe, etc., on the 13th day of March, 1922, in the coun ty of Jackson and state of Oregon then and there being, and all of said defendants then and there acting to gether, and being then and there arm ed with dangerous weapons, to-wit: with pistols and revolvers loaded with gun powder and leaden bullets and capable of being discharged, then and there having in their possession a dangerous weapon, to-wit: a rope, MICHIGAN, Ind., Aug. 4. Seattle 1, Vernon 2. inflicting death and great hodily harm when used in the manner here inafter specified, and being then and there disguised by having their iden tity obscured by robes, cowles, masks and other disguises to this grand jury unknown, and then and there encouraging and soliciting each other to do the acts of force and violence herein stated, did then and there wrongfully, unlawfully, feloniously, routously and riotously assemble and gather together without authority of law and with intent to do the unlaw ful acts hereinafter specified, and in a manner adapted to disturb the pub lic peace, and, did then and there wrongfully, feloniously, routously and riotously and in the presence of George Arthur Burr, threaten to use the force and violence hereinafter specified, and did then and there wrongfully, unlawfully, feloniously, routously and riotously use force and violence as hereinafter specified, and did then and there wrongfully, un lawfully, feloniously, routously and riotously, and in the presence of George Arthur Burr, threaten to as sault and beat said George Arthur Burr, and. threaten to shoot and in flict great bodily harm UDon and to kill tho said George Arthur Burr, and did then and there so as aforesaid assault and beat the said George Ar thur Burr, and did then and there so as aforesaid purposely point and aim said pistols and revolvers within range of said firearms at and towards said George Arthur Burr, and did then and there so as aforesaid place and tie said rope about and around the neck of the said George Arthur Burr, and place the other end of said rope over a limb of a tree which limb was above the Bald George Arthur Burr, and did then and there threaten to hang the said George Arthur Burr, and so as aforesaid did pull said rope over said limb of said tree and partly lifted the body of said George Arthur Burr by the said rope so around his neck as aforesaid, and the grand jury further charges that said threats to use force and violence so as aforesaid were then and there accompanied oy an Immediate power of execution on the part of said defendants, all con trary to tho statutes In such cases made and provided and against the peace and dignity of the state of Ore gon.
