THE result of the recall election was nn emphatic rebuke of the
Ku Klux Klan. Instead of being a. political asset, the victory
of Sheriff Terrill demonstrates that in Jackson county-K. K. K. sup-,
port is a serious, a very serious, liability.
s This is as it should bo. There is no rightful pluee in this county,
no rightful place in this state for a secret society, which seeks to gain
political control of the government. Regardless of the peculiarly in
sidious features of this particular secret organization, invisible gov
ernment ot any kind is now and always will bo a serious menace to
American Institutions. And whenever the issue is clearly involved
as it was in the special election, tho people can be depended upon to
proclaim in no uncertain terms, that 'they1 are competent to handle
their own affairs, and want no underground influences or mystic
empires to interfere with them.
'
The defeat of tho Ku Klux Klan is the more striking when the
situation is carefully analyzed. For the Lowe vote is far greater than
the actual K. K. K. strength. Hundreds of people who voted for
Lowe have no uso for the Klan as sijch and on any clear-cut issue of
upholding or condemning this organization would have voted for
condemnation, but by the propoganda issued they were led to believe
that Lowe represented strict enforcement of tho prohibition law and
Terrill didn't,' and on what they conceived to bo the best moral
grounds, they voted for Lowe.
In addition to this Lowe undoubtedly' received the discontented
vote, tho vote of those who are vaguely dissatisfied with conditions
as they are, and found in the recall of Sheriff Terrill au outlet for
their resentment, the Klan menace to them, being largely disre
garded. .
Subtracting theso votes from tho Lowe total and the Klan politi
cal strength certainly dwindles to a decidedly pathetic figure.
Unless all signs fail the time is not far distaut, , when the wide
spread report, that Jackson county is a hot bed of Ku Kluxism, can be
finally and permanently denied, and southern Oregon can regain her
former well deserved reputation of being one of tho most united and
progressive communities on the Pacific coast.

These men gave without stint and without any hope of personal re
ward all they could afford in money and time to prevent
what they sincerely believed to be a great wrong to nn honest public

The most pitiful spectacle in this
whole unfortunate business is that
those who hold themselves out as the
followers of the "moek and lowly
Christ" should, in largo numbers, bo
found In league with others whose
whole purpose is diametrically opiiosed
to the teachings and example of Him
whom they claim for their Waster. We
have found them engaged In vindica
tion and abuse, resorting to falsehood,
and even to perjury, to put into power
a class whose ritual is intended to stir
up rnce prejudice, class hatreds and
religious war. Advancing such
thoughts and purposes do not make for
pence, but the reverse. We have seen
our beautiful valley split Into factions.
crimes multiplied, bitterness and strife
engendered, families divided, hitherto
friends driven to mallgnnnt hatreds of
each other, and advertisements sent
qut to the world that we are being
hurled headlong to destruction. All of
this has some about as a result of
efforts of an organization bent on con
trolling our governmental affairs and
setting themselves up as a supergov-
ernment and "Invisible Empire"; as
suming to try, condemn and punish
others, for what the? see fit to call
crime, political and moral, without the
intervention of courts or Jury and in
lirect violation of the laws of the coun
try, And this they protend to do In the
name of law and order. Oh Justice.
Mercy and Peace, what crimes are
committed In thy nnme!
There Is no doubt that many people
have affiliated themselves with this
iirgnnlintlon, or are Indirectly foster
ing them who do not renllse what a
pitiful wrong they are committing, not
only against true Americanism, but
against themselves. Such as these
are not to be forgiven for they could
easily discover the truth if they would.
If they are so Indifferent toward the
commission of the most serious wrong,
that they refuse, or neglect to inform
themselves they, are bo criminally neg
ligent as to make themselves particeps

Again it ia a very gad thought that
those who set themselves up aB teach
ers of morals should be allied .to a
combination that has been proton to
be a combination of crooks who'' are
exploiting the public for personal gain.
In October of last year a congressional
committee took up an Investigation of
the Ku Klux Klan at Washington dur
ing which examination Col. Simmons,
the "Imperial Wizard": submitted him
self to examination and his statement
and cross-examination covered 117
pages, of the 184 pages of that sitting,
covering several days. This, has-beon,
printed by the committee and can be
had by any person who will write to
his congressman for it. The pages are
large and closely printed. I will assert
that any reasonably intelligent person
who will read this report will be satis
fied that It is what I have declared it
to be. I will not say that Col. Sim
mons intended it to be for commercial
gain, but I do say that one reading his
statement and cross examination will
reach the inevitable conclusion that it
has gone into the hands of men (and
one woman) who are exploiting it for
money, pure and simple, and in their
hands has passed beyond the control
of their "Imperial Wizard)) and that
Edward Young Clarke and Mrs. Tyler
are now absolutely,' dominating it and
dividing tbe money ..between them.
