Items NEW CAPTAIN OF ASHLAND. July 21. Capt. James Q. Adams, the new captain of First Com panyor rather 484th company under tlie revised military alignment has recently issued "first orders" to this command. After the recital of a num ber of technical details, Capt. Adams reviews the outlook prospectively from both a business and social standpoint. '""' " follows; The 4S4th company has made a rec ord second to none in shooting, admin istrative efficiency and excellence of mess, all of which we may well look upon with pride. Our attendance record is the only record in which we have failed. Let's get behind and boost, and with the old company spirit back of us, we will go to the top in this also. Drills will be varied, interesting and instructive, and cover every possible phase of infantry and artillery work. In addition, instruction will be given In boxing, wrestling, hand-to-hand fight ing, calisthenics, bayonet drill and first aid. Lectures by experts on hy giene, sanitation, army paper work, radio and other subjects will he given at frequent intervals. Entertainments,' cabarets, plays and social dances, parties and feeds will he held, and an occasional visit en masse ' to the theatre, free of charge, will be made as often as advisable. As to routine activities, including drills, etc., Capt. Adams In these initial orders admonishes the men as to duties expected of them, reminders all 01 which are "for the good of the ser vice." In desperation over the complica tions threatened by recall measures, a local woman implored a suffrage sister lor advice in the emergency how, when, and for whom to cast a ballot and received the following by mall under special stamp delivery: "Dear Jane: Have the band at the skirt bot tom, also the band yoke, made of a pretty red broadcloth embroidered in the pattern as shown, using the wors teds. On Thursday evening this week the graduation exercises of tho Practice School received their diplomas, exer cises occurring at the Congregational I church. The class numbered nearly a score of eighth grade pupils. The normal school sessions on a summer basis, as held here for the lust two seasons, close this week, the present year's gathering having been a very successful one. Lord, connected with the San Francisco Bulletin, residing as a subur banite of the Bay city, has been in town several days awaiting repairs on his oar, having met with an accident on the mountains. With his family he is on the way as far north as Seattle for a summer outing. Vexatious delays incident to car repairs have been miti gated due to the circumstance that the family finds the environment of Ash land such a delightful one in which to while away the waiting hours. A jolly outing is in prospect. The Woodman picnic, agitated for Labor Dax, is now being advocated as a joint affair, to be participated in by the Modern Woodmen, ,and Woodmen of the ' World branches of the order .throughout the valley. The proposition will be decided early In August. Of course the gathering will be bold in Ashland parks. Labor Day is Monday, Mrs., Ann, Russell, of this city, has received word of, the tragic death of a great grandson in the vicinity of Vreka due to. rattlesnake bite. On Friday eevning, July 28, Walter Denton delivers an address at Masonic hall on "Masonic Philosophy." Among tourists to the Josephine caves of late are Included the J. W. McCoy family, also E. K. Hull nnd a company of guests from hereabouts. Chas. Huchington and Minnie Jen nings motored to Grants Pass Sunday. Oscar Rodgers Is quite sick again and has the doctor from Gold Hill. Minnie Jennings of Sams Valley, visited this week with Gladys Rodgers. Wallace Dlnkens, Wm. Pomeroy and his two sisters motored to Grants Pass Sunday to watch the ball game. Mr. and Mrs. Herman Terrell of the Txieadows were trading in Medford Sat urday. Mrs. Abbott left Thursday for Oak land, Cal., to visit her sister who will accompany her home to visit here for awhile. Wm. Pomeroy and his sister, Mrs. Force of the Meadows, have been visit ed the past five weeks ny their two sisters from Washington where their parents live. They took the train Mon day for their home. Miss Zella Taylor from near Central Point is visiting her parents and sister of Sams Valley for two weeks. Mr. and Mrs. Sebrean gave a birth day dance Saturday night in honor of tlwir eldest daughter Gwalda. Besides tfte young folks of the neighborhood Mr. and Mrs. G. His souln-law und family expect to continue their journey on to Los Angeles where they expect to reside. Win. Butler passed through here Tuesday morning with his threshing machine on his way to Medford to have it repaired. A. Mr. and Mrs. Snupti of Butte Fulls were also here for dinner Friday. Saturday morning there were two men came In from Prospect for break fast on their way to catch the 7:15 a. in. stage for Medford. Since Mrs. Sherman W'ooley and her two children have gone up to take a vacation with her brother and mother in the region of Butte Falls, her hus band who has a standing job with a surveying vnrty on tho Big Butto-Eugle Point canal he takes his meals regular ly at the Sunnysido. Mr. C'ummings, the water superin tendent, took dinner Saturday at the Sunnysido and so did Clarence Pruett nnd J. M. Spenees. Mr. Spencer is one of the civil em,"' moors on the eunnl project and established a permanent camp on the old park ground, but his duties called him to Big Butte section and ho has been up there most of the time since, nnd Clarence is one of his helpers. Tho Roguo River Community club held a meeting at Hie Community hall last Monday night anil transacted business of importance to the community. Mr. C. E. Sums was elected treasurer to take the place of Mrs. Joe Burkhart who was unable to perform the duties of the office at this time. Mr. Bra shear, president of the club, appointed the executive committee consisting of II. W. Sparks, Fred O'Kelly, C. S. Hutch, A. T. Mcllvaln, and .Mrs. E. H. Faircliild. II. W. Sparks was made chairman of tho committee. The club passed a resolution making the fee for membership one dollar for each family, instead of one dollar for each individ ual member, as heretofore. Ernest Jucobson, -wlfo and family. accompanied by Mr. Jacobson's father and mother, spent Saturday and Sun day at tho Oregon Caves. Mr. und Mrs. Fred O'Kelly nnd fam ily are taking a few days vacation this week nnd motored to the Applegutu country where Mr. O'Kelly has inter ests. They will return the latter part of tho week. George nadloy, Jr., is reported very ill, due to some acute affection of tho lungs. His condition at the present time is considored serious. Rev. W. Lee Gray returned from Portland Saturday, and the people woro much disappointed on account of him not bolng able to urine his family with him at this time.
