mense amount of money was handled
with "commendable accuracy." Be
sides, the sheriff mast serve all pa
pers, and orders, must conduct all
public sales, distribute ballot boxes
at each election, make arrests for
various crimes and other duties too
numerous to mention, . He gets paid
the sura of $2,500.00 per year for
such services. He could make nearly
as much by hiring out as a farm la

Among the many rumors flying
about town ibis morning was one that
the -Mail Tribune had been wrecked
by a band of hooded vandals, and
there would be no paper today and
none until extensive and costly re
pairs could be made.
Where the rumor came from no
one seems to know, but whoever
started. It probably knows something
about who broke into the Jlaii
Tribune shop early last night and
made, off with about $30 worth of
linotype space bands.
Of course tne guilty person either
was a linotyper or knows all about
linotypes, for no ordinary cracks
man would think of taking these In
nocent looking pieces of metai.
They are small, however, easy to
carry, and have a ready market
value. Aside from the monetary
ioss, and the loss of time to tbe lino
type machines, for an Insufficient
number of space bands, necessarily
delays operation, no serious harm
has been done, as far as a superficial
examination can discover.

one. The office force have been
busy all day, answering phone calls
from apparently disturbed subacrib
