The Issue in Oregon From a
Democratic Paper's Standpoint

In other words taxation is declared the solo Issue. But is it? Issues are
not made by political centrul committees, but are forced by conditions. Taxa
tion is an important problem, hut not fundamental. .Most or the taxation is
of local and not state origin and the great bulk of excess taxation was voted
by tho people upon themselves. For years politicians have pledged lower
taxes nnd officials pledged reduced expenditures, but they keep mounting
ulong with the increased extravagance of paternalism and tho climbing cost
of living.

principles which brought the party into existence are ns much at stake today
as when Jefferson formed th party to combat secret oligarchy and preserve
tho rights of man, without regard to race or religion. It is not Democratic to
trado tho Bill of Bights, upon which the party was founded nnd tho preserva
tion of which is tho solo excuse for its existence, for a mess of pottage
an election upon false pretenses. Nor is it Democratic to dodge public Issues
of such vast import to the future.
Oregon can recover from excessive taxation nnd from an over-abundance
of office-holders. Theso ills are fleeting and bring about their own correc
tion. But to iiistull Invisible government, to turn the state over to secret
societies based upon rollglous and racial Intolerance, moans a fundamental
change in government from which tlio commonwealth will suffer for years,
and which will offectunlly retard her progress and eventually destroy her
prosperity. Such action will prove Oregon the moron of tho family of

ed by Mrs. T. H. Leet, prominent
Maryville clubwoman, In a talk to the
Mother's club of tho Buchanan street
Methodist Episcopnl church.

thorn to tell Mrs. S.-and-So, if she
comes, that wo are not at home. Wo
praise someone's clothes to her face,
then turn to the little girl and say:

that we will bo delighted to accept

that we Just despise to go.

Salsbury Springs, and that while there

And Jim Wigpole who got arrested by
Charley for speeding and was just a
little heated up himself, said to me,
look at Charleys face aint he got a
peach. And I said a peach of what?
And he said a peach of a bun. And I
said how do you know? And he said
look how flushed he Is. And I said,
for I have known Charley going on 30
years, and he aint had a drink of hard
liquor In ail that time fur as I know
youd be flushed if you was as old as
Charley .and had danced like him to
night. Then Jim says, but look at him sit
ting there while those ladies are stand
ing, aint that proof hes a drunkard
and a friend of the bootleggers? And
I said that maynt be just polite fer

the greatest long distance dancer in
Jackson County and Charley aint. Let
