Horn, In New York City recently, a
son to Mr. and Mrs. Claire Beebe, for
mer residents here. The mother was
formerly Marie Abbott.
Albert Leeds is up from California,
Joining his brother Barclay in a vaca
tion visit with numerous relatives here

The Weed Lumber Co. still wants
men for all kinds of work in which the
corporation is engaged, also the Rogue
River Canal Co. is advertising for help
on irrigation projects, the basic wage
being $3.60 per day for eight hours.
Denizens of the Lake of the Woods
region had the pleasure last Sunday of
witnessing 100.000 or more sllverslde
salmon placed in the waters of that
resort. The "planting" was official, as
superintended by the state fish com
missioner. .
Rev. John Stevens, pastor of the
First Methodist church of Oakland,
Cal., who has been visiting .relatives
here, is making tho customary pilgrim
age to Crater Lake, Mrs. Stevens ac
companying him.
Andy McCullen is home at Berkeley,
from the trip to Honolulu as a member
of Islam Temple's Shrine band of San

REACHES VALLEY

ing an approximate mileage of 4,000,

rormatlon, attracting considerable at
tention in the business section of the
city. The show returns to Medford
for a seriep of demonstrations Mon
day and Tuesday. Some of these
demonstrations will occur on the
new Jackson county fair grounds,
others upon nearby farms, and still
others 'within the city, where com
mercial, contracting and Industrial
demonstrations will be featured.
Although euch piece of equipment
seems to attract1 its. own following,
widespread interest tias been arous
ed by the almost phenomenal time
made by the caravan as a whole.
The show reached Medford at an
hour actually In advance of its
scheduled arrival. iNumerous and
dificult detours were encountered.
The roads were rough, the grades
steep, i Practically every unit was
of more than average weight. Some
of the apparatus, with trailers at
tached, required exceedingly good
driving on sharply curved detours,
yet the caravan moved steadily along
the line without a single serious mis
hap. .
"It has been a wonderful exper
ience," said J. D. Jordan, assistant
branch manager of the Ford Motor
company, Portland, "but we have
proved conclusively the ready adapt
ability of both truck and tractor to
practically every condition likely to
arise in any part of the country.
But what we have accomplished In
this overland trip is merely an Indi
cation of the much greater possibili
ties of automotive operations on the
farm and In virtually every commer
cial Industrial field. .
"The .splendid reception received
at all points has well repaid us for
the Journey thus far," continued Mr.
Jordan, "and every man In our crew
is alive with enthusiasm and eager
to meet the slightest wish of every
man, woman or child who Is or may
become Interested in any equipment
or apparatus accompanying the car
avan." Local arrangements are being per
fected by Mr. George Gates, of the
C. E. Gates Atto company, authorized
Ford and Fordson distributors In
Medford territory.
"The equipment Is so complete,"
said Mr. Gates, "that we shall be
able to demonstrate practically every
feature of truck and tractor opera
tion whether it be on the farm, a
contracting or engineering job or
commercial hauling or delivery of
any kind. .
"In fact," added Mr. Gates, "so
confident are we of our ability to
successfully demonstrate any equip
ment in the caravan that we urge

Mr. and Mrs. C. J. McLauflin of
Sebastopol, Calif., returned to their
home Monday, having spent three

Joe Rader drove his cattlo out to

last week. Mr. Rader had an offer
on his beef cattle, but the price was
not up to his wishes, so he did not
sell.

vesting the lust of his fine crop of
cherries. They were of excellent
quality this year, and brought their
giower good prices. A part of the
crop was shipped to Klumulh county,
so I was told.
Dr. and Mrs. Webster of West
Phoenix, and Mr. and Mrs. Henry
Frame were Ashland visitors ono day
last week. Dr. Webster will hnve a
heavy peach crop this year, and Mr.
Frnmo will have a heavy yield of
pears.

callers last Saturday.
C. C. Hartley of North Talent, lost
fifty young chickens In one night,
Just before the fourth, by the depre
dutlons of a litter ot young skunks.
The brooder door was left unclosed,
and Mrs. Skunk found whero sho
could procure food for her young.
Fern" valley had an exciting after
noon last Saturday when fire got out In
the foxtail and sprend to the adjoining
hills. It looked as If the entire grain
crop of the farmers of the valley was
doomed, hut help from Medford, Phoe
nix and Talent came to tholr aid. As
It was the grain was not dry enough
to burn very fast, dying out when the
fire came to a damp draw, but running
in the dry grass all over the eastern
hills back of Talent. It Is thought that
the fire started by somo children
throwing flrecrnckors into the dry
grass.
Profossor Jewett, who lins been In
Talent the past yenr, moved to Central
Point last week and will take the posi
tion of principal of tho schools there
this winter.
Mrs. Colver Furry returned from
Portland last week, and they have
moved Into one ot Jack Martin's
houses In Phoenix, where they will
live this winter. Mrs. Furry will likely
teach in tho Fern valley school this
winter.
Mrs. Kntherlne Alford nnd her son
Mose, returned from a visit with Mrs.
Alice Wlllcts, Mrs.'Alofrd's daughter,
at Klamath Falls, the last or last week
to Talent.
Charley Moldrldge and his son
Wayne, and Frank Holdrldge and a
Mend who 'Is visiting the Holdrldge
families, went to Crater Lake last
Sunday, returning the same day.
S. H. Glelm of Talent, made a busi
ness trip to Medford last Tuesday.
Mr. Glelm Is one or Talent's foremost
orchard and garden men, having a very
fine little farm In what Is known as the
Wagner creek section.
H. H. Boyer, who has lately returned
from Portlnnd with his wife to their
home in Fern valley, went out to the
Furry brothers' Dead Indian ranch for
a few days outing. Mrs. Boyer spent
the week visiting at the pleasant home
of Mrs. Joe Rader during Mr. Boyer's
trip.

Miss Leah Parker went to Grants
Pass Thursday for a few days visit
with her grandmother nnd to call on
old school friends.
The Sam Andersons hnve received a
letter from the Alford Bowman family,
who left here last week, by auto to
locate In California. The letter was
written from Berkeley and told of the
Intense heat they encountered In the
Sacramento valley. They have not as
yet found a satisfactory location.
O. S. Welcher is binding wheat for
W. B. Harris. Mr. Welcher has sev
eral pieces of grain to cut In this
vicinity.
Miss Poolo, county agent, held a
meeting on Wednesday of tills week at
the home of Mrs. Barnes-Smith. About
fifteen Indies were present and all
were much interested in the demon
stration on Jelly making which Miss
Poole gave.
The Joe Hoagland family nnd Mrs.
Hugh Porter and daughter returned
Monday from a two weeks auto trip.
They visited Portland and the seaside
resorts, also points of Interest in
Washington, They report a delightful
time.

daughter and Hlldegarde Porter leave
next Monday for an extended stay at
Diamond lake.
Mr. and Mrs. F. M. Palmer have both
been quite 111, caused by the heat, ns
have a number of others In the neigh
borhood. One of the pleasant social events of
the week was a porch supper given
Wednosduy evening by Mrs. J. W. nnd
R. W. Elden nt the latter's home. Sup
per wus served at 6:30 at small tables;
places were layed for twenty-five. A
delightful musical evening followed.
Mrs. Stewart, who resided in this
locality ror several years but Is now a
resident of the Applegate valley is
visiting her friend, Mrs. Honner at the
W liner store.
Mrs. Eva Hepler, who has been visit
ing her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Baker,
for the past week left for her home at
Crescent City last Monday morning by
stngo.
J. L. Weide, Mr. Hutch and Miss
Jessie Neathamer were Grunts Pass
visitors from here Inst Saturday.
Mr. Hutch left for the mlddlewest on
business to be gone tor some time..

operated on.
