Dan turned over his cash to the genius whose name was Creen, and
prepared to see his picture on the front page of the village news
paper, as the man who husted John D. Rockefeller.
Hut something went wrong. In a remarkably short time Uncle
Dan's fortune had disappeared and so had Green. It was quite a
blow for I'ncle Dan. but a distant relative was good enough to die at
that moment, so the old man was able to live on without working, and
continue to tell everyone on the street just how the country and the
ftate and the town should be run. So we come to the moral of this
touching little tale, which is "The man who knows just how to run
everyone else's business, never knows how to run his own."
There arc plenty of Uncle Dans, here, there and everywhere.
And strange to relate there are still plenty of people, whohave noth
ing better to do than listen to them.

THAT my taste needs some correctives I admit with stream
ing eyes, for with yarns of cheap detectives I waste hours
that I should prize. I should read the volumes deathless writ by
men of bulging domes, hut I follow, pale and breathless, the ex
ploits of Sherlock Holmes. While my wiser neighbor traces Ein
stein's theory to its source, I, with Cleek of Forty Faces, mix with
sinners vile and coarse. I pass up the stately dietion of philoso
phers and seers, and the tinhorn sleuths of fiction are my com
rades through the years. And my aunts, with eyew accusing, tell
me how I'm wasting time, but 1 find the sleuths! amusing, and
they're surely not a crime. I have found it doesn't matter what
a fellow likes to do: some one's hound to rise and .platter burn
ing language over you. If I liked the works of Dac-on, my fierce
aunts would rise and say, "By your reason you're forsaken, since
you r.ead that stuff all day!'' So, ignoring the objertives of the
good and wise and true, I commune with punk detectives who've
just found a hopeful clew.

other things he spent a couple of
weeks at the mouth of the Hogue
River in the Investigation ui it-mii-tions,

has followed this subject knows of
this.
f In view of these facts, we feel that
Mr. Thomas is entitled to fair treat
ment, and that when Mr. Colvig pub
lishes statements in regard to these
affairs that are not true, we feel that
Pitch statements should be contra
dicted. Mr. Colvig says that Mr.
Thomas was guilty of "injecting him
self into the presidency of a game
and fish association."
When the members of the Ashland
Fish and Game, Protective associa
tion were approached to consolidate
with other like clubs in Jackson
county as one club, they were inclined
to refuse because of the fear of domi
nation on the part of Medford and
along lines not approved by outside,
clubs, especially Ashland. At a gen
eral conference at Medford, it was
decided that Ashland should have
the presidency of the club, and the
Ashland committee, of which we were
members, returned home to discuss
the matter with our own members
prior to the .general meeting to be
held at Medford later. Upon a can
vass of our members,, our commit
tee found that there was practically
a unanimous feeling that Senator
Thomas represented our views, and
that he shoud be named as our choice
for president of the new organiza
tion. When informed of this, Mr.
Thomas strenuously demurred on two
grounds, viz: That his selection might
cause some dissension, and that he
had already given more than his
share of effort and should be re
lieved from further leadership. It
was only when he saw that the con
solidation might fail that he consent
ed to let Ashland present his name sis
its candidate for president of the
When Mr. Colvig makeg tle state
ment that Mr. Thomas injected him
self into the presidency, it appeared
to us so unfair that we decided to
narrate the real facts.
There was also one other state
ment made by Mr. Colvijr that was
unfair and referred to Mr. Thomas,
viz: "Since the gentleman (meaning
Mr. Thomas! to quote a prominent
daily of the capitol. 'does not know
a carp from a steelhead. nor a pheas
ant from a crow, and never fishes
only for suckers, or hunts except for
votes.' "
This quotation -is taken from an
article copied in The Tribune recently
from the Capitol Journal the paper
edited by tieorge Putnam. Mr. Put
rram's hatred for Charlie Thomas has
ben well understood in Jackson
coun'J for many years, nnd has been
one of the thjngs that has endeared
him to sportsmen. George fought
the battle oi our organisations until
we procured a closed river. H
helped undue that and thereafter has
not only favored all the McCleay in
terests wanted, even to favoring a re
tention of the seines, but has vic
iously attacked the men who hwe
been continuing the fight along fne
lines he himself fought so long before
he faced about. The lines quoted
from the Journa show the malice
and venom of the writer. the
untruthfullness is apparent on its face
and we are surprit-ed that Mr. Colvig
should adopt them as his own. As
we said, we do not know anything
about politics, but we want fair
play. -

I desire to take exception to the re
marks of Mr. Kdison Marshall in his
article which appeared in the Tribune
last Saturday, (evidently Mr. Marshall
lias been misinformed, .
The American lesion in Medford "is
not split in two," as stated in his
article.. During the past two months
the post has heen enjoying a good
healthy and substantial growth, and
for the first time in the past two years
the post is practically free of indebted
ness. Dues in the post are in a better
paid up status than they have been for
a lonir time.
The post is doing good, constructive
work, aloni; lines toward which its en
deavors should be directed, and is
keeping out of entangling alliances
which might tend to "split the ixist in
