Friends of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Short
whose house and rontents burned to
the ground recently in Phoenix have
planned a 4shover" for Mrs. -Lhort to
be held next 'Wednesday. July 12, at
2:30 p. m.. at Clyde Hull, under the
auspices of the Phoenix Aid society.
It Is desired that this shall be a com
munity nffair with every lad yd from
the village and vicinity present, who
desires to express sympathy and good
will to the Shorty in this time of
trouble. Kveryone is invited to be
present and bring some gift suitable
for household or personal use.
Mr. and Mrs. Short nnd family
have the sincere sympathy of many
friends and neighbors. ,who hope that
this gathering next Wednesday will
be in some measure a fitting expres
sion of the feeling of the community.
For the present and until better plans
can b made, the family is living in
Clyde Hall.
The pastor of th Phoenix church
and' wife. Mr. nnd Mrs. Angell. have
been invited by Rev. E. P. Lawrence
nnd wife of Medford to Join them in
a trip by automobile next week to
Corvallis to attend the annual five
day session of the Presbyterian Synod
of Oregon, and- are, of course, plan
ning to go; '
Beginning on Sunday, July 9th. by
direction of the session of the church
there will be the following change In
the evening services until September.
The young people's meeting will con
tinue to meet nt 7:15 each Sunday
evening, with special plans for a
live, interesting meeting with special
music frequently, nnd a very brief
address at the close by the pastor
(except when he Is absent on his va
cation) and the separate preaching
service following will be omitted
during the heated term.
Regular Sunday school nnd church
services every Sunday morning with
music, etc. 11 welcome and specially
invited.

Reports from headquarters this
morning Indicato that all the camp
ers arrived safely and liy bed time
were under canvas with most of the
hard work of establishing camp be
hind them.

Wakefield, Thomas, Roberts, New
bury, Hiney, Kvans and Wood used
touring cars to Bet the boys to the
camp site, which Is 33 miles dis
tant. The camp supplies were sent
by truck. .
OBITUARY
CUV.M. Ray Vernon Crum was
born at Ricevllle, Iowa, Nov. 2S.
1S74, and passed away at his home
three and one-half miles northeast of
Medford, July 6, aged 47 years. 7
months, S days. Death came as a
result of blood poison contracted
from o small Infection of the right
hand.
He leaves besides his wife, one son.
Ivan, 1 1 years of age: also two
brothers In Iowa, and one sister In
Minnesota.

Charles Ray in "A Midnight Bell," at
the Rialto theatre this week, had occa
sion to peel potatoes in one or two of
the. scenes.
.Miss Pawn is not an expert at potato
peeling and good-naturedly took some
jokes at her exense. Donald MacDon
aid, the heavy, swore that she was
making string potatoes, while Van
Dyke Urooke averred she threw the
peelings into the frying pan and the
rest into the nsh can.
When asked to give a good dinner
reci, yiss Pawn replied:

The second brood of codling moth
are beginning to emerge. This brood
will string along for several weeks.
Apples should be sprayed between
the 10th and 15th of July, following
with another application In two or
three weeks. In old blocks of Bart
lett pears where worms have been
bad, these pears should be sprayed
between the luth and loth and again
about August 1st. The pear or
chards where worms have not,. been
so bad, and where one application
will control, this should be made
from July 17th to 22nd. , This appli
cation will probably be all that Is nec
essary in Bartlett pears in most ot
the orchard districts.
A Casein spreader of a pound to
20u gallon tank may be beneficial
at this time. There is going to be a
lot of damage from codling moth and
the application of the second brood
should be very thoroughly applied.
Use from four to six pounds of
dry arsenate of lead, and eight to
twelve pounds of paste, to two gal
lon tank. By measuring the requir
ed amount of lead out in different
pails and soaking in water over night,
will increase the efficiency for
spreading qualities very materially.
Examine bands that are on the
trees every four or five days and kill
all of the worms that you find under
the bands. This is very important
and will give results.
