A bench warrant was Issued today for Dr. John D. Eckles, dentist, a klea gle of the Ku Klux Klan, after he had tailed to appear for trial on a charge of conspiring to violate the state cor porate' securities act.' The charge was brought on complaint of a num ber of investors in an oil company in which Dr. Eckles was Bald to have handled stock. . He was released on $5,000 bail. PARIS, July 7. (By the Asso ciated Press) Cuthal B.fjghnt one of Eamon UeValera'a chief lieuten ants, died today of the wounds he re ceived on Wednesday when trying to fight his way clear at the surrender of the republican garrison Jn the Sack vi lie street area. Cathnl Brugha (Charles Burffess) was one of the most prominent of the republican leaders who opposed the terms of the Anglo-Irish treaty from the start and fought against It to the finish. He-was DeValeras minister of defense in the first Dail Eireann cabinet, directing the campaign against the British in south Ireland up to the time the truce was signed in July of last year. "When the terms of the treaty ne gotiated by Arthur Griffith, Michael Collins and their fellow delegates, who met the British representatives, in London late last year became known, he declared his opposition to the pact and fought against it in -the Dail degates and in public speeches. His address against the ratification of the pact was one of tho principal features in the debatf June 1 last. He charged Griffith with having broken an agreement not to sign tho treaty until the document was submitted to the Irish cabinet and then he gave active support to the campaign 'of DeValera against the -provisional government when the treaty was ratified. Hamilton, aged 42, died to day from, injuries received late yes terday when a logging truck upset, crushing his body and pinning him beneath1 a stream of boiling water from the bursted radiator. He re mained in that position 15 minutes before being extricated and the flesh was almost entirely scalded from one arm. He loaves a widow and two sons. . It would be most unfortunate If, at that time, the sheriff should be a member ot this secret organization on trial. It Is a time for people to think. If this society is innocent of the wrongB charged, that fact will legally develop; but it is no time for those who will be defendants in the event of an Indict ment, to attempt to further tie the hands of the law, so that justice may be rendered impossible. The petition asking tho withdrawal of names from the. recall, based on "all kinds of extravagant charges," de clares "the effort Is non-partizan and circulated In the interest of harmony in the community," "good govern ment" and "economy," is as follows: To the Voters of Jackson County, Oregon: We regard the attempted recall of Sheriff Terrlll as unjust to him and as a serious mistake on the part of those signing the petition. The petition Is so Indefinite as to give a public officer no opportunity to meet it. Those cir culating the petition did not confine themselves to the allegations of the petition, but made all kinds' ot extrava gant charges, creating a situation diffi cult, if not impossible, to fairly meet. To hold an election within twenty days, based upon these Indefinite charges, but In fact influenced by ma licious mis-statements, is manifestly unfair. It is a time when the people of the community ought to be working together, instead of being pulled apart by political dissension, culminating In a special election held for that pur pose. Such an election will be an un necessary expense and an additional burden to the taxpayers, and no rea sonable cause or excuse exists there for. And it is reasonable to suppose that numerous damage actions will re sult from the present situation, entail ing additional expense upon the tax payers and creating discord and ill feeling among the people.
