Leaving Portland within the com
ing week, a number of mantifactur
erg and distributors of nationally
known power farming and industrial
equipment will tour the state, giving
a series of demonstrations covering
a period of approximately three
months. The caravan will ubo tbe
highways exclusively, utilizing
trucks, tractors and trailers ot carry
or haul the equipment.
Associated in the enterprise are
the Ford Motor company, featuring
Ford Trucks and Fordson tractors
the Standard Oil company, Oliver
Chilled Plow Works and allied manu
facturers of a complete line of farm
Implements for which the Oliver con
cern Is the XnTthwest distributor, the
Ersted Machinery Manufacturing
company, showing the Ersted hoist;
Talbot & Casey, with the Trallmo
blle and a number of tractor special
ties and attachments: Parsons-Gor-dan
company, northwest distributors
of the Lee Line trailers, contractors'
dump bodies and similar equipment;
the Francis Motor Car company with

commercial and Industrial purposes;

local demand for special demonstra
tions of a widely varied character.
In the neighborhood ot 40 trucks
and tractors will be required to han
dle the entire apparatus. It is esti
mated that approximately 4000 miles
shall have been covered by the date
of the final demonstration. Cooper
ating with the exhibitors will be their
respective local representatives in
about 150 cities, towns and villages
in Oregon and a portion of Washing
ton along the Columbia river. More
than 50 mechanics, drivers, lecturers
and technical experts will participate
ui the various demonstrations.
The Itinerary will be announced
within a few days, but it has been
definitely determined that the cara
van shall proceed under its own pow
er southward to the California line,
making brief stops cn route and
withholding actual demonstrations
until the caravan reaches its extreme
southern destination at such points as
Ashlund, Medford and Grants Pass,
from which points a return will be
made for a huge show In the vicinity
of Portland before leaving for towns
and cities elsewhere in the state.
The entire plan was originated by
W. H. Goodwin, Portland branch
manager of the Ford Motor company,
who staged a similar project in west
ern Washington a year ago.

BIBLE QUESTIONS
A large crowd attended the stir
ring lecture on "God's Revealed
Plan," Evangelist T. L. Thuemler
opening a series of meetings which he
plans to continue throughout the
months of July and August, at the
canvas pavilion on the corner of S.
Ivy and Eighth streets. The loca
tion is Ideal, and the pavilion is well
seated, furnishing a cool and com
fortable place to spend the warm
evenings. A song service is con-
ducetd from 7:45 to 8 p. m. a which
time the preaching service begins.
The Bpeakcr took for his text
Rom. 1:16. "I am not ashamed of
the Gospel of Christ, for it is the
power ot God unto salvation." He
said In part:
"The Gospel is not only the revela
tion of the power of God, but it is the
power. It is impossible for good
resolutions to bring the power to
make one bettor; as well might a man
try to lift himself by his boot straps
as to try to raise himself above his
sinful life without a power from
without. But the gospel is the rem
edy for man's depraved condition, In
it he finds the power unto salvation
from a life of sin. The Gospel was
a power in Noah's day, saving eight
souls by water, for it was by the
word of God the world was overflow
ed with water In the days of Noah.
It was by this same gospel Moses
brought Israel out of Kgypt, for it
was by the word of God they were
redeemed out ot tho house of ser
vants., It was with only three people
this mighty task was accomplished.
Moses, Aaron and Miriam.
These and many others might be
mentioned who are witnesses of God's
power; but there Is no more striking
manifestation of hci power of the
gospel than is given in a regenerated
life.
A man who has lived a life of self
serving and sini suddenly comes in
contact with the gospel, which is the
power, and instantly ho begins a new
life. His thoughts are changed, and
be is Indeed a new creature.
In tho lives of men and women is
given a testimony concerning the In
visible power of the Gospol of God
in them it is clearly seen.
Jesus likens the Gospel of the
Kingdom to a grain of mustard seed,
"which when it is sown in the earth
Is less than all the seeds that be in
the earth," but "It groweth up and
becomoth greater than all herbs." So
it is with the Gospel.
The purpose of these meetings Is
to lead nil to seek a connection with
tho power of God, and thus become
witnesses for God. We desire to en
able, our hearers to get a firmer grip
on this good 61rt gospel than ever
before, and .to place them in connec
tion with that great power, and earn
estly pray that this meeting may have
that happy termination.

NEW YOUK, July 7. Walter S.
Wurd, wealthy baker's son, charged
with the murder of Clarence Peters,
was not normal before the killing, ac
cording to the testimony of his
brother, Kalph D. Ward, before the
Westchester county grand jury, made
public tdoay. The minutes of the
grand jury were turned over to
Ward's lawyers by court order re
cently over the protest of District At
torney Weeks,
When asked by the jury if his
brother was in good health, Ralph
Ward replied, according to the testi
mony: "No, I don't think he was; at
lenst he wasn't normal."
Mrs. Ward, wife of the accused,
whose testimony also was made pub
lic, threw light on. a newspaper story
written by Cornelius Vanderbilt, Jr.,
to the effect that Ward, after being
lodged in jail, hud visited his home
one night before being released on
bail. In denying th story, she told
the jury that the young reporter had
tried to interview her on a sympathy
plea.
She said Vanderbilt sent In his
card, asking if he, could see her be
cause he was In "great sympathy
with mo." She said Vanderbilt was
very insistent upon seeing her, but
she positively declined to see him".
Before the grand jury was dis
charged it handed up a presentment
denying anderbilt's story.

M. Hoover of the Duluth boad club
today, won his first heat In the dia
mond challence sculls of the royal
Henley regatta, defeating R. J. C.
Tweed of Cambridge university by a
length and a half. His time was 10
minutes 41 seconds. ;
In another heat for the diamond
sculls, A. A. Barnes of the Commer
cltl Rowing club, Brisbane, Queens
land, defeated Earl. Great Britain, by
one-half length. The time was 9 min
utes 35 seconds.
Hoover's first heat was little more
than a practice paddle ovev the wind
swept Henley course which was lash
ed into miniature breakers by a gale
that reached 40 miles an hour. Af
ter a burst of speed at the start Hoov
er was satisfied to take it easy with
a long quick stroke. At the finish
he was hardly winded.

Jackson county fair will be more
than a county fair, providing every
business man and farmer co-operates
to the fullest extent the first year to
show the possibilities of the project.
No other activity will have the draw
ing power to this county as will the
fair, nor can there be a' better edu
cational medium provided the farmer
to make him prosperous.
. The fair this year must not merely
be a financial success, but its effect
must be far-reaching in. the pros
perity and growth of the county. '
