R. 10 QUI!, WELTY K O.'S J , Fourth of July athletic events, of unusual Interest were held at Ash land, and resulted In Walter Miller, middleweight wrestling champion oE the Pacific Coast defeating ltalph Hand, prido of Gold Hill, in eight rounds of hot and slippery mat work, Monday evening, and Ernest 'Wild cat" Welty defeating Jess Ingram of this city in four rounds Tuesday afternoon. The wrestling match was hold under, the newfangled White rules, ten minuteB wrestling, and a minute's rest and did not make much of a hit with valley fans. Both con tests were held in tho Ashland Armory, and it was hotter than Helena, Mont. Good sizeu crowds at tended. In tho wrestling match Hand was forced to quit by sudden sickness, and up to tho time of his departure, had given a good account of him self, with Wilier having the advan tage. Tho champion slapped some punishing holds on the Gold Hill con testant, and they seemed to weaken him. Miller was in good form, and possessed nil his old craft and cun ning. Both mat men sweat like Tro jans, and were hard to hold. It seemed that when one or tho other did -slap on a good hold, bins would gb th6 iSoll for the end of the round. This caused consldeable vigorous ex pressions of disgust with tho said White rules. ; Mnrtln Bowers of Gold Hill, made his debut as a referee, and did a fine job. In the boxing end of tho cclebr.T tion "Wildcat" Welty knocked ' out Jess Ingram in tho fourth round with a hard blow to the stomach. Up to this time Ingram was more than holding his own, and was getting in some stiff licks to the Wildcat's face. In the third round Welty started his attack against Ingram's mid-section, and seemed willing to take a punch to indulge in infighting. The end came when the fourth round was less thnn a minute old. In the semi-final Kid Sargent of Ashland and Mr. Burnett of Klamath fought a six round draw. Mr. Rur nott ran out of wind, and lacked zip, and the same thing must have hap pened to Sargent for he ignored the beseeching of tho crowd to niako a speech. There wero a couple of prelimi naries of some merit. K, O. Bob Brown rcforeed. .AT- A boxing smoker which Manager Bob Brown asserts will bo even bet ter than the one last Friday night, will .be staged Friday night at tho Medford Athletic club. The smoker last Friday night, which was the opening smoker of a series of regular Friday night events, was pronounced the best in many a day by the Med ford fans who saw it. For this reason, public sentiment and full government power will protect the men who remain in their positions and new men who may come in."
