Congress man Joseph W. Fordncy, chairman of the house ways and- means commit tee and author of the Fordney tar iff bill, announced positively this morning in a telegram to the Saginaw News Courier that he will not bo a candidato for re-election. Ho plans to 'retire at tho end ot his present term after 24 year's continuous ser vice in congress, : WASHINGTON, June 26. "I nm tired, I am 69 years old, I want to rest now and be with my family," Chairman Joseph W. Fordney of the house ways and means committee de clared today In announcing ho had determined not to seel: re-election from the Eighth Michigan district af ter a continuous service of 2 4 years. By the time his term ends March 4, next, Mr. Fordney said the three big measures on which he has worked this session tariff, revenue and bo nus would have been enacted into law. Coming from his committee, theso major bills kept him steadily at work and while he is still hale and firm, Sir. Fordney says ho is entitled to a rest. Cv'ows of Sir. Fordney's decision was an utter surprise to house members generally. Representative Wm. R. Green of Iowa Is tho ranking republican mem ber of the ways and means commit too. Under tho house seniority rules ho will hocomc chairman, members said, if the republicans retain control of the house in the November elec tions.' It was a novel occasion, probably the first time Sunday school i.nrt church services were ever held in a grove of lofty pines, on the banks a'. a beautiful stream 25 miles from Medford by a Medford congregation. Songs appropriate to the ocrasicn "Shall We (lather at the Ruer." etc.. were song and tho morning service was In keeping with nature's sur roundings. After services n bountiful lunch was served and "there were .overnl (small) liaskets" left over. The afternoon was spent In visiting and enjoying "God's Out-of-Doors." In one of the prettiest and cleanest wrestling matches seen in Lane county in yearn, Ralph Hand, CottaKo Grove mutnian, and George Barnes, Nebras ka, wreHtled two hours and five min utes to a draw at the armory last niKht, Each secured one fall. A good-sized house saw the contest. Barnes got the first fall at tho end of one hour and 10 minutes of torrid mixing with a head scissors and arm bar, and Hand won his in 40 minutes with a leg scissors, referee's decis sion. He had- Barnes' bum arm bot tled up tight, and many thought the Xebraskan would not be able to stave off the Cottage Grove youth in the Inst 15 minutes because of the pain he was suffering, but the easterner went in again in hammer and tongs fashion nnd came near downing the Grove expert a couple of times. Both men showed a brand of high class wrestling that should assure them matches with any one in the country. ' Barnes requested a return match, but nothing definite was done. Dempscy to FfRlit Wills. The police expressed the opinion that this organization, which was suspected of playing a prominent part in the murder o Former Minister of Finance Erzber ger, was also implicated in the mur der of Foreign Minister Kathenau last weekr' In addition, to . these arrests, a prominent monarchist, Col. Xylander was reported to have been arrested in Munich. General Maerker, a form er Relcheswhur commander, who had frequently 'been denounced in the radical press sas a reactionary, was arrested in Dresden, but was subse quently released. Collisions between workmen and monarchists were re ported today from Loschwitz, Xeuremberg and Frleberg, but with out serious cjsiihlty. THREE DIE OF HEAT ' IA DESERT N I LAND, Cal., June 2G. Three men are reported dead as a result of heat and thirst in the desert near here yes terday. One of the men died in a hos pital at Brawley, Cal., after falling ex hausted near a railway section house. Following an investigation by railway employes, two other men were found dead near an automobile which had be come stalled when its radiator went dry. None of the men have been iden !
