Such a ruling declares the president of the American Federation of Labor is nn-Anieriean, outrageous, infamous, and the supreme court should be abolished or an amendment made to the constitution, rendering such iniquitous decisions impossible. . Now, Sam Gompers is usually a pretty reasonable man, but when it comes to the sacred rights of labor, the wires in his cerebellum in variably gut twisted. lie appears to be convinced that a labor union should, for some reason, be allowed privileges and liberties which no other group of American citizens can enjoy, and when someone says labor must obey the law just any other organization in America This is unfortunate. For losing cause. And the cause of organized condition just at present, as to bo Of course, there may be some lay mind. But wo can't see, and labor organization should be any organization, why one should be privileged to throw a monkey wrench into the machinery of civilization, without paying for it, any more than the other. As wo understand it, this in brief is what the recent Supreme Court decision means. And in our judgment it is a very good decis ion, calculated to render the relations between capital and labor bet ter, and Sam Gompers' job easier, if ho will only have the enlightened self-interQst to stop his growling and perceive it. Unproductive Cherries Made Productive Experiment Station Produces Remarkable Crop of Cherries With Aid of Bouquet of Cherry Blossoms. (By F. C. Kelmcr) The Southern Oregon Experiment station has one large Bing cherry tree, fifteen years old, and one tree of I toy n I Ann and Lambert ten years old, which have bloomed profusely every spring for years, but previous to this seuson have produced very few cherries. The trees are old enough and largo enough to produce at least 200 pounds of cherries per tree. But alas! " Kvery spring the heavy bloom filled the superintendent of the sta tion with visions of a crop that would feed a hungry regiment, but at pick ing tltme there were not sufflelont cherries to satisfy a, private. Within from one to two weeks aftor bloom ing tho small green cherries would fall off to our great disgust. These trees liad received proper cultivation, irrigation, spraying, and pruning, nnd have always boen in a healthy and vigorous condition. But no matter how much wo coddled them or coaxed thorn they would not bear. After wo had tried all the usual methods to make those trees boar without nvall, wo concluded that this ImiTumiPHH was probably duo to Jack that wo vDUld try this remedy. PoUfimtioii. Just as these trees wore beginning to bloom during tho past spring, I collected at Ashland somo small branches of Black Republican cher ries which were densely covered with flower buds and wcro just beginning to bloom. Two bouquets wero made of these, one thrust Into a largo neck ed jug, nnd tho other into a bucket, each containing water to keep iho flowers fresh for a week. Tljto jug was hung into one of our tree and tho bucket into the other. Within a day or two theso bouquets and also the trees wero In full bloom. Then tho important work of tho bees began. In visiting tho flowers in tho Black Jtepubllcnn bouquets for the nectar theso bees became covered with pollen; and this was accidentally carried to the pistils of tho Blng, Lambert, and tho Jtoyal Ann blos soms while tho hoes wero visiting thoso flowers. This pollen fertilised theso blossoms with tho result that our two trees this year -are loaded with fine cherries. It Is well known that all the small Immature cherries will fall off tho tree unless tho seed Is fertilized with tho right kind of pollen during tho blossoming scasqji. I must also emphasize - that every Black Ilcpuhllcan cherry blossom contains, thousands of pollen grains, one. of' which Is sufficient to fertilize and produce cither a Bing, Lainirt or Royal Ann cherry. Hence a bou quet of Black Republican is suffic ient to fertilize all the blossoms on a large tree of any of our standard varieties. Many complaints have come to this experiment station regarding the un productiveness of. the Bing, Royal Ann and Inmbert cherry trees in many places In this valley. Every caso investigated has shown that this is duo to lack of proper polllnizors nearby. Whorever the proper pol lenizers nro growing In the neighbor hood, these varieties are very pro ductive At tho experiment station, wo are topgrafting ono branch on each of our trees with a scion of Black Re publican cherry. - This iil ensure proper pollination for und good crops on our trees in tho future. This method I recommend to all those having unproductive cherry "trees. Until these topgrafts begin to bloom I would suggest placing a bouquet of the proper pollinizers near each tree ns described above. In planting new orchards at least ono tree in every twenty should bo either a Black Re publican or a Black Tartarian or a Waterhouso, All thoso Interested In the results obtained at the station are hcroby in vited to visit tho experiment station near Talent next Monday afternoon, June 12, to see tho crops on tho trees nnd to get further details regarding tho work and results.
