Gross postal receipts ot tlio Medford
postofflce for the first five months of
this year, show a 11 per cent increase
over the same period in 1921. From
January 1, 1921 to Hay 31, 1921 the
gross receipts totaled $17,142.52, and
for the same period this year amount
ed to $19,051. 02. Dascd upon the pres
ent ratio of Increase, the Medford post
office will do a business of $50,000 and
over this calendar year.
In considering these figures of pos
tal business and receipts, one should
consider that they are recognized as
the truest barometer of a community's
prosperity, and Invariably rise and
fall, with the changing tide of condi
tions. The high water mark of the boom
days in August, 1911 the postal re
ceipts for tho twelve months preceding
totaled $1)3,527.49. For the eleven
months from July 1, 1921 to May 31,
1922, tho receipts were $42,957.21.
For the 12 months preceding Sep
tember, 1908, when the present records
began the receipts were $13,454.91.
From thence the receipts showed a
galii until the high mark of tho boom
period, and then a decline commenced,
reaching ebb for the 12 months preced
ing October, 1915, when the receipts
aggregated $26,614.72.
For the poriod Immediately follow
ing the war, and its lasti days, when
the three-cent stamp and tho two-cent
postcard was In effect, the receipts
from July 1, 1918 to Juno 30, 1919 were
$34,595.05.
The following is a table of compari
son of the gross receipts, for the first
five months of 1921, and the present
year, and with the exception of Janu
ary, 1922 shows an increase over 1921:

Tho falling oft in January is due to
the slack after tho Christmas rush.
The high month for this year is March
with receipts of $1,435.56. July and
August arc, usually dull, and tho full
and winter months are generally heavy

Busiest Lumber Mill in the
County Is On Tomlin Prop
erty Over 50 Men Em
ployed Cutting 35,000 Feet
Per Day.
Tho busiest lumber mill In southern
Oregon just now Is the mill at tho
Tomlin Uox factory, in north Medford.
About 35 thousand feet of lumber is
put out daily, and the box factory has
a capacity of approximately 8000 apple
or pear boxes every 24 hours.
The past few weeks Mr. Tomlin has
Installed new machinery and equip
ment in both the sawmill and box
factory, and whenever circumstances
Justify can enlarge to a 50,000 foot
capacity. 'Over 50 men are being em
ployed at the present time, and boxes
are being sent all over the Pacific
coast and even down to Mexico.
The logs for the Tomlin mill are
trucked in from the hills near Medford
and also some logs are sent in from
the Grants Pass and Glcndale districts.
At the present rate of growth Med
ford promises to have in the Tomlin
property one of (he largest box fac
tories in the state in the near future,
for it has made a steady and consis
tent growth since its establishment.
