Usually vacations are expensive and not altogether profitable nf

certain to pay substantial dividends late on in life.
There is no military service involved. The young man who takes
this training is under no greater obligation in ease of war, than the
one who doesn't. lUit he has a far greater chance of being useful
to his country in ease war should descend upon the world again. And
that is the really important item. Medford should be well repre
sented at this citizen's training camp this summer.

A Tree That May Banish Leprosy
WASHINGTON, D. C. Announce
ment that the number of patients on
the famous leper island of Molokai,
Hawaiian Islands, is steadily growing
less, due to the paroling of patients
apparently cured by chaulmoogra
oil, turns attention to this important
disease problem In the tropical pos
sessions of the United States, and to
the possibility that it may one day
be entirely solved. What the magic
chaulmoogra oil is and where it
comes from is told in the following
bulletin issued from the Washington,
D. C, headquarters of the National
Geographis society.
Known In Kat for Azcs.
"Though chaulmoogra oil, made
from the seeds of the chaulmoogra
tree, has been used in India, and
other parts pt the east for centuries
for the treatment of skin diseases,
there was long a mystery about it to
Westerners. The fruit, round and
about the size of oranges, found
their way to many of the bazaars and
markets of India, Burma and Kiam,
but little was known ot the source
of supply. So long as the oil was
merely rubbed on the skin and taken
internally, it seemed to be only a pal
liative, and there was no great
worldwide interest in it. But since
western science separated the cura
tive principles and prepared them in
a form which makes possible hypo
dermic injection, there have been
brought about what appear to be
many permanent cures.
"When this stage of development
had been reachfd, so that hope could

one of the most dreadful diseases
known, the demand for the raw ma
terial became much greater than the
available supply. With the Idea of
obtaining seeds and from them grow
ing a "crop of tho benefit-lent trees, I
the United States Department of
Agriculture sent a plant explorer to
southeastern Asia to search for the
unknown chaulmoogra forests from
which the epoch-making cures had
flowed.
A T-ong Trail.
"It was then that the world's
ignorance of what had become one of
nature's priceless boons, became evi
dent. The oil was in use in Slam,
and It was thought that tho trees,
existed there. I!ut a Journey through
all the promising regions of the
country failed to disclose a single
tree. The trail then led across the
line Into Tlurma where a few lno
lated trees were found, but without
fruit. Clues were followed for hun
dreds of miles farther before for
ests of the chaulmooxras were en
countered in central Burma.
"The gathering of chauImooRra
fruits In Ilurma is not without its
dangers. Wild elephants live In
herds in these Jungles and now nnd
then attack and destroy the nearby
villages. The forests ore also Infested
with man-eating tigers. It was only
after an encounter with one of the
latter that the American expedition
was able to take from the region a
supply of tho long-sought seeds.
With the seeds obtained, a plantation
of chaulmoogras has been establish
ed lif Hawaii and the beginning of a
domestic, supply of the valuable oil
is, looked for In about, eight years."

THE OLD DOGS.
OFT WIIEX ailing I recall doctors of the days f,'ne. by, who
from death would take a fa'l when I seemed inclined to
die. There was good old Dr. Storm, who would eome up in his
gig, when the colic rocked my form, and my agony was bitf.
"When he'd filled me up with dope, ho would say, "111 do my
best; with his sickness I can cope if he's given perfect rest. Do
not let him walk a step, let his sleep be long and sweet, and I'll
stake my wel1 known rep that he'll sown be on his feet." There
was sense in being ill in those bright days gone so long, when the
sawbones said, "He still! It est till you. are well and strong!"
Xow the doctor comes to me, looking learned and grim nnd wise,
and he says, aloud, says he, "What you need is exercise 1 Indo
lence will cook the goose of the huskiest of men! You are moldy
from disuse wa'k eight miles, or, better ten!, I could give you
piebald pills, I could give you potions pink, but you'd .better
climb the hills on your rusty legs, I think. Go and saw a cord iif
wood, go and bale a ton of hay, and you'll soon be feeling good,
aDd you'll bless me every day." What's tho use of being sick
when I get this from the doe: "Ho and buy yourself n pick and
tret down and quarry rock!"
