' - SUCCESS, SAYS DOSTOX, May The only trouble with prohibition is its lack ot en forcement," and the 18th amend ment "has resulted in untold good among the thousands of families mhost likclv to suffer severely be-j cause of intemperance. jonn . Moors of Boston, president of the Family Welfare society, told the Unitarian Temperance society i today. As one of the speakers on "Prohi bition Kesults." Mr. Moors gave rep resentatives ot the Unitarian par ishes of the United Statos and Can ada a description ot tho findings of his staff of workers in this city. The Volstead act, he said, had decreased the number of new cases In the ju venile court of Boston, had enabled many families to accumulate savings which tided them over periods of unemployment, had ' decreased the number of applications for aid to the society nnd had its Influence on the industrial situation, in keeping ir regular workers "who are most sub ject to the temptations of drink" from spending their wages for intoxi cants. "Prohibition has favorably affect ed family life among those we visit," said Mr. Moors. 'Today many fam ilies are better and happier for it. Figures in regard to arrests In Bos ton must not be misunderstood. To, say arrests for drunkenness In 1421 increased almost 100 per cent over those for the same period In 1920 ls true, but It ls equally true that ar rests in 1921 were 100 per cent less than In 1916, 1917, and 1918. "Considering the effect upon the drinker of some of the liquor now being sold, and the attitude of the police, there is no doubt that a higher per cent of drinkers are now arrested than formerly. "There Is evidence also that many of those arrested for drink are with out family connections and are often persons who are unemployed and who have no residence in the com munity. "Many men who formerly were constant drinkers now break over occasions '.ly. 'This means less money wasted In drink and more money in vested In tho welfare of the family. It means better home life and better opportunity for the children, OBITUARY BOSTWICK Mrs. Bert Bostwlck of Williams died at her home Mon day morning at 5:15, her death came as a shock to friends and relatives. V. Kennedy, father of the slain man and Henry Wali foreman of the Jury. Wall told newspapermen he had voted for conviction. The second trial of Mrs. Mada- iynn wnencnajn. jo.nuy inoinea lthl ls 3ct or Jun District Attorney Thomas J.ee Wool wine announced several days ago Mrs. Obenchain would be retried re gardless of the outcome of I the Burch case. This was the third trial in connection with the Kennedy slay ing. The first Burch Jury stood ten to two for convi.-tlon and the Oben chain Jury 9 to 3 for conviction. LOS ANGELES, May 22. Arthur C. Burch was Jointly indicted with Mrs. Matdalynno Obenchain, both being charged with the murder of J. Helton Kennedy, local broker, at, Kennedy's summer cottage at Beverly Glen, near here the night of Aug. 5, last. .' Separate trials were grantod and each defendant has been tried once, each Jury disagreeing. The prosecution's theory was that Burch, being infatuated with Mrs. Obenchain, a former eollego acquain tance, shot Kennedy at her Instigation, after Kennedy, with whom she was In love, had refused to marry her. The evidence showed that on July 17 Mrs. Obenchain telegraphed to Burch, who was in Evanston, III., to come to Los Angeles, the telegram say ing, "I need you and the friend I bad last summer." Burch arrived here July 23 bringing with him a shotgun case, according to the testimony. The prosecution claimed that the gun was the "friend" referred to in the tele gram. ' Burch took a room In a hotel com manding a view of Kennedy's office and watched the office windows for long periods, according to hotel em ployes.' According: to the testimony he aLo rented an automobile under an assumed name and took extended trips. Mrs. Obenchain and Kennedy went driving the night of 'August C, and about 9 o'clock stopped at Kennedy's summer cottage In Beverly Glen. As Kennedy was mounting a flight . of steps in front of the cottage, two shot gun shots were fired. One struck Ken nedy, and medical testimony showed that death was instantaneous.
