All the candidates for office think it smart to announce they "stand for sound legislation." Sound is right A sample of ."sound legislation" is the holy and sacred Rogue river fish bill. They talked about it 40 days and nights before they passed it. ; What gives a good many people neuralgic pains in the left shoulder is the 3rd degree nuttiness of congress - when it comes to lending money to Russia. - The latest revealment is the , loaning of $187,000,000 to the batter brained Kerensky. Of this amount $87,000,000 disappeared as slick and clean as if it had been on deposit In the Bank of Jacksonville. The august , body seems to be utterly unable to re sist the1 temptation to pour VS. gold down the international rathole, while throwing oratorical fits against the bonus bill. , A STONY HEARTED DAD (Coos Bay Times) Born, to Mr. and Mrs. Ed Eng blom on April 30, ah eight-pound ' boy. , Both mother and son are doing nicely. This is the third child, and all boys. Ed says they are sure out of luck. c , I Henry Ford in the story of his life In McClure's mag. says he wanted to be a watchmaker, and is sorry he was unable to fulfill his ambition. So is everybody else. Another $1,000,000 rain fell over the valley yes. pro. and eve., and it has no political significance, though all guber natorial aspirants claim they are to blame. According to Kernel C Yens TengwaM, '"this rain is worth $10,000 to us alone." He did not state the valuation, if they were with somebody. This leaves $990,000 to be apportioned tn this county, and what is needed is a Commissioner of Downpours, with 17 assistants in every township to see that none of it is misused. The rain was evenly distributed, and was inter spersed with snow. A charge that more drops landed on Prank Bybee's alfalfa, than on Bill Gore's oats proved groundless. A large number of shoes, It developed during the time the water was turned on, were made from the bides of cows that had grazed on paper. ; ' CLUCK! CLUCK! CLUCK! 1 (Corvallis Gazette-Times) ED 8NOW CHAMPION ' BIG EGG PRODUCER Woodro w. Wilson was able lion, to ; call Sen. Jim Reed of Missouri a i "marplot." This is not hightoned cuss fj Jng, as many will suspect Sen Reed i had the gall to oppose Mr. Wilson's government by blunder and rhetoric, ' and the latter Is now mad at him. jj The senator also proved Mr. Wilson ! wrote a letter he said he did not write. ! 1 George Cheese has been appointed city marshal of Jefferson. (Salem Capital Journul). Safe crackers, beware! i' . Now and then one reads in the papers of a millionaire not charged With bigamy or some other aristocratic skullduggery.', t PHOEBE! BABY NEEDS A ; NEW PAIR OF SHOES t i , ' 1 ' (Turner News) ',; ., Vester Bones of Hones Bros, i garage Is the proud father of an ; ' ' 8 pound boy. ' Luck has turned against General Vu. The head writer of this Journal had him in hot water Monday. . i Children In Spring Time ; Mrs. C. Osborn, 7812 Hillside Rd., Cleveland, O., writes: "My grand daughter was troubled with a cough for nearly two yearB. She took Foley's Honey and Tar and her cough is now gone... .It loosened the phlegm so she could raise it easily." Foley's Honey and Tar Is Just what children should have for feverish colds, coughs, "gnur lles" and tight, wheezy breathing. Be sure to get Foley's. It checks croup and whooping cough, top. Sold every where. Adv. CEKTAIN ft'iiturofi of the ptvst-nt primary ctinipaigu are laugh able. This is fortunate.' For there is onoulv tlTat is altogether depressing to rentier the campaign almost unbearable to those citi zens who take their political obligations seriously. The laughable portion pertains to the recall of the public service commissioners. Messors. liuchtcl ami Williams. As The Mail-Tribune pointed out months go, this recall is prompted primarily by the do sire of a few self-interested politicians to get a couple of fairly well paid jobs. " Toward this end an unpopular decision of the commission was seized upon to arouse public resentment against l.ucluel and Williams,-and with the recall instituted the scramble begun. It sooti developed that there were, as often happens, more candi dates than jobs.. An assembly was called, and one of the chief back ers of the recall was turned down. So another assembly was called, by the disappointed candidate, and when the required number did not appear, a dance hall was invaded ami the gay revellers con scripted to snpply the necessary jazz. lint still there were aspirants unprovided for. So a third nsseiu bly was gathered together and two more candidates sent on their way rejoicing. How many candidates there are now, no one knows. What their qualifications are no one knows and no one will know. Hut the merry war is on, wun one candidate having just as gootl a gnnibling chance us another. We repeat this is rather amusing. It emphasizes Puck's time honored dictum, "What fools these mortals be!" And vet it would be more amusing if the people didn't have to pay for it. For this recall, utterly unwarranted from a public welfare standpoint, involves a special election, and the expenditure of thous ands of dollars of the tax payer's money. More than that in attempt ing to punish public officials for the courage of standing by their convictions, even when unpopular, this recall threatens if successful, to render the public service commission a inere tool of designing polU tieians. ' The only hope, therefore, of retaining any lasting refreshment from this eclipse of Oregon's political intelligence; is to defeat this recall, and keep Jlessers. liuchtcl and Williams where they belong. It is an obligation which, we believe, the people of Oregon will sus tain by their votes at the coming election. Quill Points Steel is regaining its temper, so to speak but coal still looks black. As a rule when a man thinks he's original he has one original thought, at any rate. New York's "eivie virtue" turns out to be a statue, and not a myth, as commonly supposed. f Hell doubtless has its drawbacks, but there probably won't be any smell of Turkish cigarettes there. What has become of the old-fashioned young man who felt wild and wicked when he smoked a cubeb t Our system of government is sound. The troublejs that the pub lic servants we choose have so little else to recommend them. There's one good thing about bobbed hair. " It does away with the necessity of trying to pronounce the darned word "coiffure." It is well to remember, however, that the past occasionally pro duced a great man who hadn't a single million to his name. About the only way a girl can get her shape in the papers now, is to invent a way to attaeh a radio outfit to her bathing suit. And if wrestling doesn't prove a better defense than boxing, per haps some professional will get Dempsey's goat in a foot race. welt Mason THE ONE SOLACE. I SMOKE my grand old pipe by day, I keep it going half the night; and moralists come up and say, "Such dissipation is a fright; the young behold you as they pass, and then for briar pipes they yearn, in which to smoke buds, leaves and grass, or any herbage that will burn." I've cut out all the ancient sins that blemished once my wide renown ; I have forsworn imported gins, the pallid beer and porter brown. My conduct is so pure and nice it might become a king or queen; no longer do I shake the dice, or play the creaking slot machine. I've cut out cards and domi noes, and crokinole, and all ueh games; I read good books while grandma goes to play bridge whist with other dames. I know that wickedness is vain, I know my old time course was rank; it's long since I have robbed a train or pulled a gunplay in a bank. I've cut out all the evil things, except the pipe that soothes my soul, and now the moralists, by jings, would see my briar in -the hole. And that's the trouble, all the time, with those good souls who lead crusades; they'd make this old world so sublime that all its comfort wilts and fades. They know not when it's time to stop, since they have squelched the Demon Hum; soon we'll bo pinched for sipping pop, or chewing fragrant sticks of gum. We Are Catholics because our reason and a million evidences around us prove there Is a God, and while Jesus Christ, the Hon of God, lived on earth, Ho founded a Church. Consult your Uible, Matt. 16-1S, "And I say also unto thee that thou art Peter, and upon this rock 1 WILL BUILD MY CHURCH." Observe the use of the singular number, CHURCH. History proves conclusively 'that that Church was the Catholic Church. That is why we belong to it.
